The fourth Saratoga (CV-3) was laid down on 25 September 1920 as BattleCruiser #3 by the New York Shipbuilding Co., Camden, N.J.; ordered convertedto an aircraft carrier and reclassified CV 3 on 1 July 1922 in accordancewith the Washington Treaty limiting naval armaments; launched on 7 April1925, sponsored by Mrs.
Saratoga continued thisimportant training duty for almost four months, but as early as October,her division commander was warned that "while employed primarily fortraining, Saratoga is of great value for combat and is to be kept potentiallyavailable for combat duty." The call came in January 1945.
Saratoga's flight deck forward was wrecked, her starboardside was holed twice and large fires were started in her hangar deck whileshe lost 123 of her crew dead or missing.

Saratoga continued operations in the Hawaiian Island region; but, on 11 January 1942, when heading towards a rendezvous with Enterprise, 500 miles south-west of Oahu, she was hit without warning by a deep-running torpedo fired by Japanese submarine, 1-16.

USS SARATOGA was laid down on 16 December 1952 by the New York Naval Shipyard, New York City, N.Y.; launched on 8 October 1955; sponsored by Mrs.
From the Gulf, SARATOGA returned to the Mediterranean and was there relieved on 7 October by USS JOHN F. "Super Sara," along with Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17), began her final deployment 12 January 1994, entering the Mediterranean Sea January 26 after a choppy Atlantic Ocean crossing.
USS SARATOGA and the USS MISSISSINEWA (AO 144) are in a minor collision during an underway replenishment off the Florida coast.

Saratoga was detached from the main force, and with an escorting cruiser, was sent on a wide southward sweep before turning north to approach within striking distance of her target, the Panama Canal.
USS Lexington (CV 2) was at sea about 425 miles southeast of Midway toward which she was headed to deliver a Marine Scout Bombing Squadron.
USS Enterprise (CV 6) was also at sea, about 200 miles west of Pearl Harbor, returning from Wake Island where she had delivered a Marine Fighter Squadron.

 USS Saratoga Museum Foundation, Inc. - History and Background of CV-60
This Saratoga (CV-60) was the second vessel of the supercarrier Forrestal class, and the second aircraft carrier to bear that name.
After surviving the conflict, USS Saratoga (CV-3) went to the bottom of the Bikini Lagoon during the Operation Crossroads atomic bomb testing in 1946.
In 1985, Saratoga played a role in the rescue of the hijacked luxury liner Achille Lauro, and F-14 Tomcats from Saras Air Wing forced down the aircraft on which the hijackers were escaping.

3 April 1945: At 1744, a Japanese single-engine plane missed the port forward corner of the flight deck, exploding in the water abreast the forecastle.
For instance, USS Ticonderoga and USS Franklin were both hit twice and USS Intrepid suffered a total of five kamikaze hits.

I was on the USS Saratoga in the VA-105 "Gun Slingers" during the Med Cruise of the Summer/Fall 1971.
The USS Saratoga was attacked by a British ship on September 11, 1814, and her gallant crews fought back despite the ship sustaining some damage.
I served on the USS Saratoga from 1989 to 1992 as a QM2.

She sailed from Philadelphia on 6 January 1928 forshakedown; and, on 11 January, her air officer, the future World War IIhero, Mare A. Mitscher, landed the first aircraft on board.
During the secondphase of the problem, Saratoga launched a surprise air attack on Pearl Harborfrom a point 100 miles off Oahu, setting a pattern that the Japanese copiedin December 1941.

American technological skill raised and repaired all but three of the ships sunk or damaged at Pearl Harbor (the USS Arizona (BB-39) considered too badly damaged to be salvaged, the USS Oklahoma (BB-37) raised and considered too old to be worth repairing, and the obsolete USS Utah (AG-16) considered not worth the effort).
The next two carriers, the LEXINGTON (CV-2) and the SARATOGA (CV-3), were built on unfinished battlecruiser hulls and kept the names selected for the cruisers.

Originally established as Carrier Air Group 3 (CVG-3) in July 1938, it is one of the two oldest carrier air wings in continuous U.S. Navy service.
The air group was redesignated Carrier Air Wing 3 (CVW-3) in December 1963 and served during the Vietnam War aboard the USS Saratoga CV-61 in 1972.
In May 1997, Carrier Air Wing 3 was assigned to the USS Enterprise CVN-65 and, as of August 1998, was undergoing carrier qualifications in preparation for deployment with the Enterprise to the Mediterranean.

Between 14 October and 29 October 1940, Saratoga transported a draft of military personnel from San Pedro to Hawaii, and on 6 January 1941, she entered the Bremerton Navy Yard for a long deferred modernization, including widening her flight deck forward, fitting a blister on her starboard side and additional small antiaircraft guns.
Two hours later, Saratoga launched a strike which sent Japanese carrier Ryūjō to the bottom.
She operated in the vicinity of Nouméa for the next twelve months, providing air cover for minor operations and protecting American forces in the Eastern Solomons.

His first was aboard the USS Saratoga (CV 3) in the gunnery, communications and engineering departments as a junior officer until 1940.
He commanded the squadron throughout the period of hostilities, and was awarded the Navy Cross, "For extraordinary heroism in action against enemy forces during the Allied Invasion of Southern France in August 1944." Captain Bringle also received the Croix de Guerre with Silver Star from the Government of France for his part in the invasion.
Another year and a half of sea duty as executive officer of the USS Hornet, 1953-1954, was alternated with 2 1/2 years of shore duty as head of the Operational Intelligence Branch of the chief of naval operations, and as the naval aide to the secretary of the Navy.
