  USS Satterlee (DD-626) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Satterlee was laid down on 10 September 1941 by the Seattle-Tacoma Shipbuilding Corp., Seattle, Washington; launched on 17 July 1942; sponsored by Miss Rebecca E. Satterlee, niece of Capt. Satterlee; and commissioned on 1 July 1943, Lt. Comdr.
Satterlee escorted the British aircraft carrier, HMS Victorious, from the Western Seaboard to the Atlantic coast, where the new destroyer joined the U.S. Atlantic Fleet on 26 August 1943.
Satterlee returned to the east coast in October 1944 for training at Casco Bay: In January and February 1945, she escorted Quincy, with President Roosevelt embarked, on the Norfolk-Bermuda portion of his trip to and from the Yalta Conference.

USS Augusta (CA-31) (originally CL-31) was a Northampton-class heavy cruiser of the United States Navy, notable for service in the Atlantic and Mediterranean during World War II, and for her occasional use as a presidential flagship carrying both Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman under wartime conditions.
Oiler USS Merrimack (AO-37) joined the task force on 28 April and fueled almost all of the ships, with Augusta's scout planes maintaining an air patrol during the dangerous fueling evolution.
At 0804, as the Ranger's bombers were releasing their loads, the battleship USS Massachusetts opened up with salvoes of her 16 inch guns on Casablanca's quays and ships.

The first Satterlee (DD-190) was laid down on 10 July 1918 by the Newport News Shipbuilding Co. Newport News, Va.; launched on 21 December 1918 sponsored by Miss Rebecca E. Satterlee, niece of Capt. Satterlee, and commissioned on 23 December 1919, Comdr.
Satterlee joined her destroyer flotilla at Manzanillo Cuba, on 27 January 1920 and conducted training in the,Caribbean until 26 April.
She then operated along the east coast until decommissioned on 8 October 1940 Satterlee was transferred to the United Kingdom on the same day and served the Royal Navy as HMS Belmont, one of fifty old American destroyers exchanged for bases in British Colonies in the western Atlantic.

On 4 July, Satterlee left Pearl Harbor and commenced air-sea rescue patrol duty between Saipan and Okinawa and performed this duty for the rest of the war and the initial months of the occupation.

Aside from the beautiful box art by Mikiya Yoshihara, the kit is virtually identical to the original release, although the instructions are different, showing which alternate parts are needed to build the ship in her late 1942 fit.
If you're interested in building a Livermore-class DD in late 1942 kit (Guadalcanal campaign), you may consider picking USS Buchanan DD-484, whose starboard and port sides of her fancy Measure 12 scheme both survive in photographs.
Both early SC and SC-2 type radar arrays are included (most Livermore-class DD's were fitted with the SC type, at least until early 1943) as well as the Mk.12 Fire Control Radar carrier atop the Mk.37 director.

The DDs that would be at sea would be on escort duty, or an occasional offensive sweep but that was more often done by MTB or MGB.
When the actual invasion fleet sailed it had to have significant escort of anti-E Boat and antiaircraft protections, all were preceded by a flotilla of minesweepers to open the lanes to the Invasion Beaches.
While awaiting invasion duties most DD flotillas would be based outside of normal German Bomber range, possibly in Northern Ireland if not on convoy duty.

Oneshooter, you're right, also the Harding (DD-625), Satterlee (DD-626), and McCook (DD-496) were there, and the McCook supposedly went into the surf line to take the point under "direct fire" knocking a German gun off the cliff (I guess the Skipper wasn't going to be ooutdone by the BB :D).
Also, many of the DD CO's disobeyed orders and closed the beach to pick up survivors and give medical aid, often coming under direct rifle and machine gun fire from the Germans.
