Savannah returned to Algiers on 10 August to train with Army units for the invasion landings to be made at (A battle in World War II; the port was captured by United States troops in September 1943) Salerno.
Savannah departed Norfolk on 13 November and reached (A port city in northern France on the English Channel at the mouth of the Seine) Le Havre on the 20th.

USS Savannah (CL-42) was laid down on 31 May 1934 by the New York Shipbuilding Association, Camden, N.J.; launched on 8 May 1937; sponsored by Miss Jayne Maye Bowden, niece of Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr.
Savannah's Northern Attack Group was to land Brigadier General Lucian K. Truscott, Jr.'s 9,099 officers and men, including 65 light tanks, on five widely separated beaches on either side of Mehedia.

When commissioned, USS Savannah was 414 feet 6 inches in length overall, had an extreme beam of 46 feet 1 inch, and had a mean draft of 26 feet 5 inches at her normal displacement of 10,800 tons.
USS Savannah's last duty was carrying passengers from San Pedro to Bremerton...where she arrived on 15 October 1926.
USS Savannah (AS-8) was decommissioned on 16 December 1926...and was placed in reserve at the Puget Sound Navy Yard.

i served onboard the uss savannah aor-4 from 1981 to 1983 and roger phillips was a shipmate of mine at that time.
The USS SAVANNAH (AOR-4) is currently berthed in a cluster of other ships awaiting to be disposed of by scrapping.
