USS Savannah (CL-42) was laid down on 31 May 1934 by the New York Shipbuilding Association, Camden, N.J.; launched on 8 May 1937; sponsored by Miss Jayne Maye Bowden, niece of Senator Richard B. Russell, Jr.
Savannah returned to Algiers on 10 August to train with Army units for the invasion landings to be made at Salerno.
Savannah's navy yard overhaul was completed on 4 September 1944; she was underway the next day, and reported to the Commander, Fleet Operational Training Command on 10 September for shakedown and refresher training.

When commissioned, USS Savannah was 414 feet 6 inches in length overall, had an extreme beam of 46 feet 1 inch, and had a mean draft of 26 feet 5 inches at her normal displacement of 10,800 tons.
USS Savannah's last duty was carrying passengers from San Pedro to Bremerton...where she arrived on 15 October 1926.
USS Savannah (AS-8) was decommissioned on 16 December 1926...and was placed in reserve at the Puget Sound Navy Yard.

Savannah increased her speed to 20 knots as a twin-engined Dornier (D-217) bomber came in out of the sun.
After two such cruises to Cuba, Savannah debarked the midshipmen at Annapolis on 30 September, took on others, and sailed on 1 October for Pensacola, Fla. She spent the Navy Day celebrations from 25 to 30 October 1945 in her namesake city.

The third Savannah was launched on 18 April 1899 as Saxonia for the Hamburg American Steamship Co. by the Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany.
Transiting the Panama Canal, Savannah proceeded to Kingston; Key West; Norfolk; and New London; eventually reaching the Boston Navy Yard for an extensive overhaul and conversion on 13 February 1918.

 USS Kearsarge (BB-5) Information
USS Kearsarge (BB-5), the lead ship of her class of battleships, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named, by act of Congress, in honor of the famous American Civil War sloop of war Kearsarge.
Her keel was laid down by the Newport News Shipbuilding Company of Newport News, Virginia on 30 June 1896.
In 1945 the crane ship was towed to the San Francisco Naval Shipyard where she assisted in the construction of carriers Hornet (CV-12), Boxer (CV-21), and re-construction of the Saratoga (CV-3).

Text The third Savannah was launched on 18 April 1899 as Saxonia for the Hamburg American Steamship Co., by the Flensburger Schiffbau Gesellschaft, Flensburg, Germany.
Standing out of Boston harbor on 1 August 1918, Savannah made for Newport, R.I., to rejoin the 8th Division, Submarine Force, then consisting of 0-3, 0-4, 0-5, 0-6, 0-7, 0-8, 0-9, and 0-10.
Then ordered to the Pacific Fleet, Savannah departed the Canal Zone on 23 February 1925 for San Diego, arriving on 12 March.

On 28 October, while Yorktown, the battleship USS New Mexico (BB 40), and other American warships were screening a convoy, a destroyer picked up a submarine contact and dropped depth charges while the convoy itself made an emergency starboard turn, the first of the convoy's three emergency changes of course.
While USS Ranger (CV-4), USS Wasp (CV-7), and the recently commissioned USS Hornet (CV-8) remained in the Atlantic, Yorktown departed Norfolk on 16 December 1941 and sailed for the Pacific, her secondary gun galleries studded with new 20-millimeter Oerlikon machine guns.
Picked up by the destroyer USS Hammann (DD-412), Buckmaster was transferred to USS Astoria (CA-34) soon thereafter and reported to Rear Admiral Fletcher, who had shifted his flag to the heavy cruiser after the first dive-bombing attack.

The glider bomb pierced through the armored turret roof of the number 3 gun turret, passed through three decks into the lower handling room where it exploded leaving a gaping hole in the bottom, and tore open a seam in the ship's port side.
The badly damaged Savannah was back in the United States on 23 December 1943 and was repaired and refitted at the Philadelphia Navy Yard.
