Richard B. Russell USS Archerfish (SSN-678), a Sturgeon-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the archerfish, a family (Toxotidae) of fish notable for their habit of preying on insects and other animals by shooting them down with squirts of water from the mouth.

This was Sculpin’s first major overhaul and refueling since commissioning, seven years before, and she was in drydock from 30 January 1968 to 22 January 1969.
Sea trials and training lasted until 26 July when she sailed to Pearl Harbor on a shakedown training cruise.

A total of six Sturgeon-class boats were modified to carry the SEAL Dry Deck Shelter [DDS], one in 1982 and five between 1988 and 1991.
The are SSN 678-680, 682, 684, 686 are listed as "DDS Capable" -- either permanently fitted with the DDS or trained with them.

Following completion of nuclear power and submarine training in March 1979, Rear Adm. Bird reported to USS Seahorse (SSN 669) in Charleston, S.C. During his 40 months aboard Seahorse, Rear Adm. Bird deployed to the North Atlantic, the Mediterranean Sea, the Indian Ocean and circumnavigated the globe.
In December 1984, he was assigned as Navigator and Operations Officer on board USS Sea Devil (SSN 664) in Charleston, S.C. During this two-year tour he deployed to the North Atlantic and completed a fifty-day under-ice Arctic Ocean deployment at included surfacing at the North Pole.

Left the Navy and the Sea Robin in Aug. 1967 as ETN2(SS).  We have lived for the past 25 years in SE NY, 90 minutes due north of the "city" in the beautiful Hudson River Valley.
Decomissioned her June ‘56.  Reported to USS Sablefish (SS-303).   May ‘57 transferred to USS Sea Robin (SS-407).  Dec ‘57 transferred to Compulsory Shore Duty at Navy Recruiting Sub Station, Albert Lea, MN.  In 1959 was Recruiter of the Year.
