  USS Sea Robin (SS-407) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Sea Robin (SS-407), a Balao-class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy named for the sea robin, a spiny-finned fish having red or brown coloring on its body and fins.
Sea Robin was laid down by the Portsmouth Navy Yard in Kittery, Maine on 1 March 1944; launched on 25 May 1944, sponsored by Mrs.
Sea Robin's third and final war patrol was conducted in the Yellow and East China seas.

USS Sea Dog (SS-401) was a Balao-class submarine in the United States Navy.
On 1 December, she rendezvoused with submarines Guardfish (SS-217) and Sea Robin (SS-407) to form a coordinated attack group with the commanding officer of Sea Dog in charge of the wolf pack.
Sea Dog remained based at Key West into the fall of 1955 when she was ordered to New London, Connecticut, to begin inactivation.

USS Sea Poacher (SS/AGSS-406), a Balao-class submarine, was a ship of the United States Navy named for the sea poacher, a slender, mailed fish of the North Atlantic.
From 1946 to 1949, Sea Poacher was based at Balboa, Canal Zone, as a unit of Submarine Squadron 6 (SubRon 6) engaging in fleet exercises and antisubmarine training, and, on 1 June 1949, was transferred to Key West, Fla., as a unit of SubRon 4.
Sea Poacher was reclassified an Auxiliary Submarine AGSS-306 on 1 November, decommissioned on 15 November 1969, and was assigned to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet at Philadelphia.

USS Sea Cat (SS-399), the name being a shortened form of sea catfish, a marine fish of little food value found off the southeastern coast of the United States, was authorized to be built by the United States Congressional Act of 9 July 1942...
USS Sea Cat, herself, accounted for some 400 tons of enemy vessels by gunfire, and she picked up two survivors of the sunken enemy ships for questioning...before returning to Pearl Harbor on 25 June 1945.

Sea Robin (SS-407) was laid down by the Portsmouth, New Hampshire Navy Yard on 1 March 1944.
Sea Robin's luck changed on 6 January 1945 when she torpedoed and sank her initial victim of the war, the 5,000-ton Japanese tanker TARAKAN MARU.
Departing Subic Bay on 19 March, Sea Robin set course for the South China Sea in the area of the island of Hainan where, on the 23d, she rescued a downed airman.

On 30 January 1945, USS Threadfin sighted a large enemy patrol craft, but prudently allowed her to pass, unmolested, in the hope of drawing a bead on any merchant vessels for which she might be running interference.
USS Threadfin was the lead ship in a Sixth Fleet Naval Review to honor the visit and inspection of the naval units by the President of the United States...Richard Nixon...who watched the demonstrations from the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.
The boat proved to be every bit as sound as the day she was built when operations with USS Glover required the submarine to run at test depth for many hours for several days...while that sonar test platform evaluated the detection capability of new equipment against a submarine running deep in the Mediterranean Sea.

The first one I took was aboard USS Threadfin (SS-410) on 22 February 1949.
During my 31-year submarine career, I served in USS Sea Leopard (SS-483), USS Burrfish (SSR-312), USS Sennet (SS-408), USS Guavina (AOSS-362), USS Becuna (SS-319), USS Sea Robin (SS-407), USS Francis Scott Key (SSBN-657), and USS Threadfin (SS-410).
All of these submarines were built and served in the Second World War except USS Francis Scott Key...which was a fleet ballistic missile submarine - nuclear powered - which first went to sea in 1966 - with me aboard.

Built by the Portsmouth Navy Yard, the USS Threadfin (SS-410) was commissioned on 30 August 1944.
In April 1945, the Threadfin and other submarines were stationed outside the entrance to the Japanese Inland Sea to provide warning to the Allied fleet as enemy vessels sortied during the assault on Okinawa.
U.S. Operating out of the Yellow and East China Seas, the Threadfin’s third patrol opened with the successful sinking of an enemy schooner in a surface attack using her 5-inch deck gun.

As was the case for many of the US submarines that were constructed during the later part of W.W.II, the USS Sea Robin was to remain in continuous service up to the early 1970's.
Many, like Sea Robin served their final years mostly in training roles.
Their numbers gradually dwindled during the later 1950's, but it was not until the 1960's that more modern submarines were operational in sufficient numbers to begin assuming the watch.

Still, one of the most rewarding moments for Cornell during his years as a submariner came in 1954 on the bridge of the USS Squalus in Portsmouth, N.H. The sub is known for sinking in May 1939 and losing 26 men.
Aboard the Squalus, on the part that has been raised, Cornell received his U.S. Navy Dolphins insignia, which must be worn at all times during duty.
Cornell was 18 and had earned them because he had passed his oral submarine test aboard the Sea Robin, SS 407.
