 USS ORTOLAN (AM-45) (ASR-5)
USS Holland (AS-3) was the submarine tender for the squadron.
On 10 December 1941, USS Ortolan (ASR-5) steamed west from the west coast of the United States, and, eleven days later, arrived at Pearl Harbor...to assist in the staggering salvage effort, which was the aftermath of the surprise Japanese attack two weeks earlier.
USS Ortolan (ASR-5) was decommissioned on 18 March 1947; struck from the Navy List on 10 June 1947; and transferred to the United States Maritime Commission for subsequent disposal.

 USN Ships--USS Seal (SS-183)
USS Seal, a 1450-ton Salmon class submarine built at Groton, Connecticut, was commissioned at the end of April 1938.
Seal began her first war patrol from Manila in the middle of that month, sank a small freighter and ended the cruise at Soerabaja, Java, early in February 1942.
USS Sturgeon (SS-187) is immediately beyond Stingray, with the wakes further in the distance probably belonging to USS Seal (SS-183) and USS Salmon (SS-182).

SEAL (SS-183) was laid down on 25 May 1936 by the Electric Boat Company, Groton, Conn.; launched on 25 April 1937; sponsored by Mrs.
Following an extended shakedown cruise in the Caribbean and a post-shakedown yard period, SEAL departed New England in late November and proceeded to the Panama Canal Zone to commence operations out of her home port, Coco Solo.
SEAL was awarded 10 battle stars for her World War II service.

The Battle of Leyte Gulf continues with the sinking of the USS Midway (CVE-63).
The battleship USS Mississippi shuts down its big guns just after 4.09am, presumably the last main battery battleship to battleship round.
Around 0230 in waters in the northwest corner of the Formosa Straits, USS TANG fires her last torpedo and the crew watches in horror as it makes a circular run and striking the ship portside aft near the manoeuvring room.

The tolling of the boats ceremony was held at Seawolf park, alongside the USS Cavalla and USS Stewart.
The national anthem was performed by the Rumble Seat Four barbershop quartet; the tenor, John Harlan, is a submarine veteran who served on the USS PIPER, SS-409.
The walls were bedecked with photos of Cavalla and her crews, the tables had sailor caps and assorted Cavalla pictures, plus a unique SS or SSK centerpiece.
