The name, unique among US carriers, was a reference to the Hornet (CV-8), which had been lost; after the Doolittle Raid, launched from the Hornet, President Roosevelt answered a reporter's question by saying that the raid had come from "Shangri-La", the faraway land of the James Hilton novel Lost Horizon.
On 2 and 3 June, the task force launched air strikes on the Japanese home islands--aimed particularly at Kyushu, the southernmost of the major islands.

So little was the threat from the dwindling Japanese air arm that the Americans made no attempt whatever to conceal the location of their armada which was operating off her shores with impunity.
On one occasion during that time, the battleship received a request for call-fire support and provided three starshells for the 1st ROK Corps, illuminating a communist attack that was consequently repulsed with considerable enemy casualties.
Relieved as flagship of the 7th Fleet on 1 April by sistership USS Iowa (BB-61), Wisconsin departed Yokosuka, bound for the United States.

Well, Jack, All I know that USS Shangri-La and her Air Group 85 Corsair have the new single letter "Z" marking that was adopted on 27 July to replace the short-lived "G" symbol system(a white lighting bolt).
Prior to that, there were some 28 different geometric designs that had been used up to that point by the CVs and CVLs in TF-38 to identify their planes.
These were somewhat confusing and hard to identify if you were in a hurry, so they were done away with and all carriers were required to use a one letter or two-letter identifier on the tail, upper right wing, and lower left wing.
