 USS Shark (SSN-591) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Shark (SSN-591), a Skipjack-class submarine, was the seventh ship of the United States Navy to be named for the shark, a large predatory fish with a full cartilaginous skeleton, a streamlined body plan, dermal denticles covering the body to protect from parasites, and rows of replaceable teeth in the mouth.
Shark was in drydock at Norfolk from 1 January 1970 to 9 August 1971.
Shark was deactivated, in commission, on 16 October 1986 and formally decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 15 September 1990.

The third USS Shark (SS-8) was an early Plunger-class submarine in the service of the United States Navy, later renamed as A-7.
Loaded on board the collier USS Caesar, Shark and her sistership USS Porpoise comprised the auxiliary's deck cargo as she proceeded, via the Suez Canal, to the Philippine Islands.
Shark was launched soon after her arrival at Cavite in July and was recommissioned on 14 August 1908.

USS Shark (SS-174), a Porpoise-class submarine, was the fifth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the shark, a large, marine predator.
Following two years of operations in the Hawaii area, Shark set sail from Pearl Harbor on 3 December 1940 to join the Asiatic Fleet based at Manila, Philippine Islands, where she engaged in fleet tactics and exercises until the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
On 6 January 1942, Shark was barely missed by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine.

On Jan. 25, Shark was advised that heavy air raids on Ambon might indicate an enemy landing force moving toward the island.
One was east of Menado on northern Celebes on Feb. 11, 1942; the second was north of Kendari on the southeast coast of Celebes on Feb. 17, 1942; the third was east of Kandari on Feb. 21, 1942.
Loss of Shark to an enemy minefield is deemed improbable, since the enemy was on the offensive at this time and would naturally hesitate to lay mines in the path of his advance down the Strait of Makassar.

In August of 1905, USS Plunger underwent two weeks of upkeep before clearing the yard on 22 August, towed by the tug "Apache," bound for Oyster Bay, where she would conduct trials near the home of President Theodore Roosevelt.
Reassigned to the Charleston (South Carolina) Navy Yard, USS Plunger reached that port on 24 October 1909 and moored alongside gunboat USS Castine, the submarine tender for the Atlantic Submarine Fleet.
USS A-1 (SS-2) was sold for scrap on 26 January 1922.

Both the USS Robert E. Lee (SSBN/SSN-601) and the USS Thomas A. Edison (SSBN/SSN-610) were was decommissioned in joint ceremony held aboard the USS Missouri (BB-63).
The USS Robert E. Lee was the third nuclear-powered fleet ballistic missile submarine to join the fleet.

Matthew Perry obtained a midshipman's commission in the Navy in 1809, and was initially assigned to USS Revenge, which was under the command of his elder brother.
During that war Perry was transferred to USS United States, and consequently saw little fighting in that war afterward since the ship was trapped at New London, Connecticut.
Perry commanded USS Shark from 1821-1825, and from 1826-1827 acted as fleet captain for Commodore Rodgers.

One transport that sailed with us was sunk by the USS Shark 2, SS-314, and American submarine, claiming the lives of 1850 Allied POW's.

On 6 January 1942, Shark narrowly escaped being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine.
Post war examination of Japanese records suggests that Shark was sunk by gunfire from the Japanese destroyer Yamakaze on 11 February 1942, but this information has never been confirmed.
Shark was reported overdue and therefore presumed lost on 7 March 1942.
