Matthew Perry obtained a midshipman's commission in the Navy in 1809, and was initially assigned to USS Revenge, which was under the command of his elder brother.
During that war Perry was transferred to USS United States, and consequently saw little fighting in that war afterward since the ship was trapped at New London, Connecticut.
Perry commanded USS Shark from 1821 - 1825, and from 1826 - 1827 acted as fleet captain for Commodore Rodgers.

 Biography - Commodore Matthew C. Perry
USS Commodore Perry, a side-wheel steamer purchased in 1861, was named in honor Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry and his brother Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry.
During the summer of 1852 as a brief interlude in his preparation for the expedition to Japan, he was sent to the British provinces to adjust some differences concerning the rights of American fishing vessels.
Perry was directed to first try persuasion and argument and in case of failure, he was to resort to stronger tactics but keeping in mind that the mission was one of peace.

Unfortunately for the British, the main claim for the HMS MACEDONIAN in history is the fact that she was not only captured by the USS UNITED STATES but also has the distinction of being the only British warship that also returned to an American port during the War of 1812.
The USS UNITED STATES then closed and used her full broadside to reduce the British ship to a complete wreck.

In 1821 he received his first independent command, the USS Shark, which he took on another voyage to Africa.
He also championed the transition from sail to steam power and was regarded within the service as "the Father of the Steam Navy." He supervised the construction of and commanded the USS Fulton, the navy's first prototype seagoing steam warship.
