SHARK sailed for the Mediterranean and duty with the 6th Fleet on 12 August 1961.
On 7 April 1965, at the shipyard, SHARK was presented the Navy Unit Commendation for meritorious service from 5 April to 9 May 1964, a period in which she "achieved results of great value and importance to the U.S. Navy in the field of antisubmarine warfare capabilities."
SHARK was decommissioned 15 December 1989, struck from the Navy List 11 July 1990 and disposed of through SRP at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard on 28 June 1996.

The seventh Shark (SSN-591) was laid down on 24 February 1958 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Co., Newport News, Va., launched on 16 March 1960, sponsored by Mrs.
Shark returned to Norfolk on 25 October 1965 and conducted type training, individual ship exercises, and ant/submarine warfare exercises until 8 January 1966.

USS SNOOK is named for a fish known scientifically as Centropomus undecimalis (BLOCH).
She was placed in commission 24 October, 1942 under the command of LCDR C.O. On completion of shakedown training off the New England coast, she left New London, Connecticut on 3 March, 1943 enroute to the Pacific, arriving in Pearl Harbor on 30 March, 1943.
USS SNOOK was decommissioned 8 October 1986, struck from the Navy List 14 November and was scheduled for disposal through the SRP at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.

She participated in various local operations off San Diego which included the sinking of the USS ARCHERFISH (AGSS 311), that ship being used as training target after being decommissioned.
The MK 14-5 hit between the after end of the conning tower and the after battery hatch (perfect amidships hit), lifted her out of the water, broke her in half, and it was all over.

His initial duty assignment was a three year tour on board the USS Charles S. Sperry (DD 697) where he served as Main Propulsion Assistant and as Chief Engineer.
Upon completion of nuclear training, he reported to USS Shark (SSN 591) where he qualified in submarines and later served as Engineer Officer.
In 1964, as a Lieutenant Commander, he was assigned to the Staff of Commander Submarine Force, U.S. Atlantic Fleet after which he served as Executive Officer of the Blue Crew of the USS Lewis and Clark (SSBN 644).

USS SKIPJACK (SSN-585) was the proto-type which mated nuclear power with an Albacore hull.
During her shakedown cruise in August 1959, she became the first nuclear ship to pass through the Straits of Gibraltar and operate in the Mediterranean Sea.
SKIPJACK then got underway for sea trials off Charleston, before joining USS SHARK (SSN-591) for four days of type training in the Jacksonville, Florida area.

Named after the fish, the USS SHARK was the fifth SKIPJACK - class nuclear-powered attack submarine and the seventh ship in the Navy to bear the name.
Decommissioned on September 15, 1990, the SHARK entered the Navy’s Nuclear Powered Ship and Submarine Recycling Program at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton, Wash., on October 1, 1995.

We probably ought to start refueling and upgrading the Flight I 688s, that would be a start.
Several of the boomers were converted to SSN/seal delivery teams - the last two - USS Polk and USS Kamahameha were just recently de-commissioned.
The only real solution to our immediate shortage of SSNs is to refuel the 688's that were planned for decommissioning rather than refueling!!

After graduating from Pelham High School and a brief period of study at Florida State University, he joined the U.S. Navy and served in the U.S. Atlantic Submarine Fleet aboard USS SHARK (SSN-591) as a mechanical operator in the boat's nuclear power plant between 1988 and 1989.
Even when he was in the Navy, he spent his spare time reading The Wall Street Journal and competing with a couple of his shipmates in an investment club.
