John Shaw was born at Mt. Mellick, Queens County, Ireland, in 1773.
During the Barbary War[?], Shaw commanded frigate John Adams in the Mediterranean under Commodore Rodgers from May to November 1804; and frigate United States during the War of 1812.
USS Shaw DD-373 is best known for its spectacular explosion during the Attack on Pearl Harbor.

The first USS Shaw (DD-68) was a Sampson-class destroyer in the United States Navy during World War I.
Shaw was laid down on 7 February 1916 by the Mare Island Navy Yard; launched on 9 December 1916; sponsored by Mrs.
Shaw was struck from the Navy list on 25 March 1926 and transferred to the Coast Guard the same day, to serve in the Rum Patrol.

October 9, 1918: The USS Shaw DD-68, while escorting the liner Aquitania suffered a jammed rudder which caused the ship to turn in front of the 45,000 ton liner.
In 1926 the Shaw was transferred to the Coast Guard and served there until 1933 when she was returned to the Navy.
Her name was canceled in Nov. 1933 so it could be assigned to a new destroyer (Shaw DD-373), which would be made famous by in a photograph taken of her explosion during the attack on Pearl Harbor.

 William Halsey, Jr.
Lieutenant Commander Halsey's World War I service, including command of USS Shaw (DD-68)[?] in 1918, was sufficiently distinctive to earn a Navy Cross.
In 1922-1925, Halsey served as Naval Attache in Berlin, Germany, and commanded USS Dale (DD-290)[?] during a European cruise.
Vice Admiral Halsey was at sea in his flagship, USS Enterprise (CV-6), during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941.

 Ships Alongside
Secretly, in company with two other destroyers, the U.S.S. Halsey Powell and the U.S.S. Marshall, she met in the mid-Atlantic to become the proud escort for the U.S.S. Iowa which was carrying the late President Roosevelt from the Casablanca conference.
She subsequently accompanied the U.S.S. ALASKA CB-1 and the U.S.S. in a shore bombardment mission on Minami Daito Shima, Rasa Island, on the 9th of June.
She returned to her anchorage, near the U.S.S. MISSOURI BB-63, on the 2nd of September, 1945, in time to be on hand when the official surrender accords were signed that day by the Japanese officials.

 Pearl Harbor Attack: USS Shaw (DD-373) Action Report
U.S.S. Shaw was in the old New Orleans floating drydock (YFD2) at the Navy Yard, Pearl Harbor, on the morning of December 7, 1941.
This ex-U.S. destroyer was knocked off the bilge blocks while in drydock at Portsmouth, England, on December 5, 1940, by a bomb which struck a dock altar alongside the ship.
There were also some rivets out of the shell at the main deck between frames 68 and 75, where repairs were being made to frames.

At that time the USS Nevada (BB-36), despite her wounds, managed to get underway and move down the channel toward the open sea.
American technological skill raised and repaired all but three of the ships sunk or damaged at Pearl Harbor (the USS Arizona (BB-39) considered too badly damaged to be salvaged, the USS Oklahoma (BB-37) raised and considered too old to be worth repairing, and the obsolete USS Utah (AG-16) considered not worth the effort).

 USS Shaw
Two United States Navy destroyers have been named USS Shaw, after John Shaw, a notable officer in the early days of the Navy.
The first Shaw (DD-68) served in World War I, losing her bow in an accidental collision with another ship, but later repaired.
The second Shaw (DD-373) also lost her bow, during the attack on Pearl Harbor, but was repaired and served actively through the rest of World War II.

As for old dog Shaw he hated me with a passion, I happened to be one of the lucky snipes that helped decorate bos'n mate compartment sleeping in the very front, in the first racks what a ride some times.
Krouss was putting a red E on the stack and Tom Shaw stepped out of the hatch and told me to have a good life Fireman Seaman which ever one you are.

NEW JERSEY replenished from USS POLLUX (AKS 4) in the morning and from USS VESUVIUS (AE 15) in the afternoon.
In the morning it was USS MATTAPONI (AO 41) for fuel, and in the late afternoon, MOUNT KATMAI for bullets.
USS MONTROSE (APA 212) arrived the same morning and provided outstanding boat service for NEW JERSEY liberty parties until the 20th, when the ship returned to the gunline.

On 5 December, Admiral Kimmel sent the USS Lexington with a task force under Rear Admiral Newton to deliver 25 scout bombers to Midway Island.
The last Pacific carrier, USS Saratoga, had left Pearl Harbor for upkeep and repairs on the West Coast.
The USS California (BB-44), USS Maryland (BB-46), USS Tennessee (BB-43) and USS Nevada (BB-36) also suffered varying degrees of damage in the first half hour of the raid.

But note, that doesn't mean they weren't taken by this mysterious 'old shipmate' just because the 'shipmate' served in USS QUAPAW.
It means that this mysterious shipmate had the pictures when he was serving in QUAPAW and took them while he was stationed on some other command in Pearl Harbor during that attack.

Dredging of the Pearl Harbor channel entrance began in 1910 and, on December 14, 1911, USS CALIFORNIA (CA 6) became the first warship to pass through the new channel into Pearl Harbor.

I was onboard the USS Newport News during the NATO cruise and Cuban crises as a member of the Flag Allowance of COMSECONDFLT as a SK2.

She was headed for duty with the Seventh Fleet in the waters of the South China Sea, off the coast of North and South Vietnam.
These were guided missile frigates and destroyers that were dispersed at three stations along the North Vietnam coast from which they controlled aircraft and conducted rescue operations for pilots unable to return to their parent carriers.
