USS Shipley Bay (CVE-85) was laid down under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 1122) on 22 November 1943 by Kaiser Co., Inc., Vancouver, Washington; launched on 12 February 1944; sponsored by Mrs.
Shipley Bay moved down the coast and operated in the San Diego-San Pedro area until 3 May when the carrier began her maiden voyage to Pearl Harbor and the South Pacific ferrying planes and pilots to advance bases.
Shipley Bay was struck from the Navy list on 1 March 1959 and sold for scrap on 2 October of that year.

USS Rudyerd Bay (CVE-81) was laid down under Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 1118) on 24 October 1943 by the Kaiser Shipbuilding Co., Vancouver, Washington; launched 12 January 1944; sponsored by Mrs.
Rudyerd Bay arrived at Guam on the 23d, detached VC-96, and embarked VC-85 as passengers for transport back to the United States.
Rudyerd Bay continued on, discharged cargo and passengers at Eniwetok, then proceeded to Ulithi and the Philippines, whence she moved VC-33 to Okinawa.

After returning to Ulithi at the end of the month, the carriers put to sea again on 11 December, this time striking the Manila Bay area during the landings on Mindoro.
Although she resumed dangerous radar picket duties soon thereafter, the warship escaped further damage for almost three months -- though it was not for lack of trying by the Japanese.

 VPNAVY - VP-2 History Summary Page - VP Patrol Squadron
In July 1944, after the installation of Rocket Rails and a period of special training at NAS Quonset Point, Rhode Island, the squadron flew to NAS Alameda, California, and embarked on the CVE-85 USS Shipley Bay for the first leg of its journey to the South Pacific.
Throughout the remainder of WW2, the squadron moved its base of operations frequently and was credited with the destruction of numerous Jap A/C and Radar Installations.
VP-2 became the first patrol squadron to serve a third tour with its detachments in Siagon, Vietnam and became the first squadron to serve a third tour with Operation Market Time Patrol Force.
