Silversides bored in on the ill-fated enemy ships, fishnet and all, and fired three torpedoes at the first ship, with two hits that tore her stern open.
Silversides set sail on 5 October for her seventh war patrol in which she sank four enemy ships in waters ranging from the Solomons to the coast of New Guinea.
Silversides' fourteenth and final war patrol began with departure from Pearl Harbor on 30 May. This patrol was spent on lifeguard station in support of air strikes on Honshu, Japan.

USS Silversides has all-welded construction, all-electric drive, all diesel engines, advanced refrigeration systems, air purifiers, fresh water distillers, oceanic cruising range, and optimum crew "habitability" for her time with such conveniences as air conditioning, an ice machine, showers, and entertainment systems.
USS Silversides is in excellent condition with most of her mechanical systems still operational.
USS Silversides was commissioned on December 15, 1941, just 8 days after Pearl Harbor and saw service during the entire period of the War.

USS Clamagore does not appear to meet the criteria for designation because of the loss of her World War II integrity and her lack of service in the Pacific.
USS Torsk appears to meet the criteria for designation because she is the only surviving Tench class submarine that saw service in the Pacific.
USS Torsk is particularly significant in that she fired the last torpedoes of World War II and is credited with sinking the last Japanese combat ships to be lost in the war.

Since 1987, the Silversides has been tied to a dock in Muskegon, Mich., it's hull resting (slightly tilted) on the bottom of the small channel connecting Lake Muskegon and Lake Michigan.
At one point, Japanese destroyers besieged the Silversides, rudely dropping depth charges in the sub's general vicinity and breaking all local noise ordinances.
But somewhere far away, people on other submarines--and destroyers and frigates and carriers and guided-missile cruisers--were heading to the Persian Gulf, a corner of the world which was not peaceful and quiet.

USS Silversides was commissioned into the U.S. Navy eight days after Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor.
Silversides completed 14 war patrols and sank 23 ships, the third highest total of enemy ships sunk by a U.S. submarine during the war.

USS Roncador, a failed exhibit in Long Beach, was scrapped in 1983 and the Navy allowed historic submarine operators to remove needed items before she was transferred to the scrapper.
Bob Morin, the director of Silversides, knew we were still looking for the proper main deck gun and knew USS Tautog, one of the highest scoring submarines of WW II, had been scrapped in Manistee, a few miles north of him.
Silversides (SS-236) continues to help, as have submarines Bowfin (SS-287) in Honolulu, Hawaii, Cobia (SS-245) in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Cod (SS-224) in Cleveland, Ohio, Croaker (SS-246) in Buffalo, New York, Lionfish (SS-298) in Fall River, Massachusetts, Torsk (SS-423) in Baltimore, Maryland, Requin (SS-481) in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and the destroyer Kidd (DD-661) in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

He rode USS SILVERSIDES toward the end of the war and he quipped on many occasion that the crew was unhappy that there were no targets, no Japanese ships on the ocean but he also said that it was because of SILVERSIDES and other American submarines that there were very few Japanese ships still afloat.
JOE was a nice guy and was with us on our "Patrol" in Red China.

Next July, the Michigan DX Association will be operating a special event station aboard the WWII submarine USS Silversides, located in The Great Lakes Naval Memorial and Museum at Muskegon MI.
There will be a special call sign for the special event, and operators get to spend the night aboard the sub.
