USS Simon Bolivar (SSBN-641), a Benjamin Franklin-class ballistic missile submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for Simón Bolívar (1783–1830), a hero of the independence movements of the former Spanish colonies in South America.
Simon Bolivar completed her third deterrent patrol in January 1967, operating as a unit of Submarine Squadron (SubRon) 18.
Simon Bolivar departed Newport News on 12 May 1972 for post-overhaul shakedown operations and refresher training for the two crews which lasted until 16 September.

SIMON BOLIVAR returned to Newport News Shipbuilding in February 1971 for overhaul and conversion to C-3 Poseidon missile capability.
Upon completion of overhaul SIMON BOLIVAR returned to her homeport of Charleston in January of 1981.
SIMON BOLIVAR was decommissioned and struck from the Navy List 1 OCT 94 and subsequently disposed of through SRP at PSNS 8 February 1995.

After graduation from the Submarine Officer Advanced Course in November 1982, Rear Adm. Bird was assigned as Engineer Officer on board USS Simon Bolivar (SSBN 641) in Kings Bay, Ga., where he completed four strategic deterrent patrols.
In December 1984, he was assigned as Navigator and Operations Officer on board USS Sea Devil (SSN 664) in Charleston, S.C. During this two-year tour he deployed to the North Atlantic and completed a fifty-day under-ice Arctic Ocean deployment at included surfacing at the North Pole.
In September 1989, Rear Adm. Bird was assigned as Executive Officer of USS Tunny (SSN 682).

After attending Submarine School, he saw duty on the USS Medregal (SS-480), the USS Bream (SS-243), and served two tours of duty ashore at the Steam Torpedo Shop at Pearl Harbor and as an Instructor at the ASW School in San Diego.
