The Sims class destroyers were part of the US Navy's efforts in the years leading up to WW2 to increase the size of its destroyer force, but through several designs since WW1 had failed to come up with one ideal class.
The Sims as built was optimised for surface combat, and she was top-heavy as a result.
Sims herself was sunk in the battle of the Coral Sea in 1942, with a heavy loss of life.

William S. Sims, born in 1858 in Ontario, Canada, was appointed to the Naval Academy in 1876 and graduated in 1880.
Sims next served as Inspector of Target Practice; and, under his supervision, the naval gunnery system increased the rapidity of hits 100 percent and the general effectiveness of fire 500 percent.
Admiral Sims again became President of the Naval War College in April 1919 and served in that capacity until his retirement on 15 October 1922.

Named for Canadian-born Admiral William S. Sims, a progressive gunnery officer who helped propel the U.S. Navy to the front rank of world navies in the early years of the twentieth century, USS Sims was the first of a twelve-ship class completed in 1939-40.
Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Destroyer Squadron (DesRon) 2 was assigned to Task Force 17, centered on USS Yorktown.
On May 6, the eve of the Battle of the Coral Sea, Sims and the oiler USS Neosho were detached from the fleet.

The first Sims (DD-409) was laid down on 15 July 1937 by Bath Iron Works Corp., Bath, Maine, launched on 8 April 1939- sponsored by Mrs.
The light carrier, Shoho, was attached to the covering force, and the big new carriers, Shokaku and Zuikaku, were the striking force under command of Admiral Takagi.
The bask force refueled on 5 and 6 May and then detached Neosho and Sims to continue to the next fueling point.

William S. Sims was an aide to President Theodore Roosevelt, president of the Naval War College, and overall commander of American destroyers and later all U.S. naval forces in European waters during World War I. The first destroyer to bear his name was DD-409, launched on 8 April 1939 and commissioned on 1 August 1939.
By early May 1942, the Coral Sea was the target of a major Japanese offensive consisting of one task force to cover troops landing on Tulagi and Port Moresby and a second task force, led by the carriers SHOKAKU and ZUIKAKU, to strike at Allied shipping in the area.
With confrontation imminent, the two task forces were combined and on 6 May, the SIMS was ordered to escort the oiler NEOSHO (AO-23) out of the area as the rest of the task force headed for Tulagi.

On 28 October, while Yorktown, the battleship USS New Mexico (BB 40), and other American warships were screening a convoy, a destroyer picked up a submarine contact and dropped depth charges while the convoy itself made an emergency starboard turn, the first of the convoy's three emergency changes of course.
While USS Ranger (CV-4), USS Wasp (CV-7), and the recently commissioned USS Hornet (CV-8) remained in the Atlantic, Yorktown departed Norfolk on 16 December 1941 and sailed for the Pacific, her secondary gun galleries studded with new 20-millimeter Oerlikon machine guns.
Sims — her antiaircraft battery crippled by gun failures — took three direct hits and sank quickly with a heavy loss of life.

On May 7, I was serving as Chief Signalman on board the U.S.S. Sims.
After several days we were picked up by the U.S.S. Henley and while enroute to Brisbane Australia, I prepared a report which I gave to the Commanding Officer of the U.S.S. Neosho who had been taken off by the U.S.S. Henley.
There were a large number of our shells which failed to burst at the beginning of the attack but after several rounds, number unknown, the fuse settings seemed to be operating satisfactory as bursts were observed near the enemy planes.

This system was first introduced on the destroyer USS Sims (DD-409) in 1939 and was quickly adopted for all new US construction of destroyer size and larger.
It differed from previous US directors by having the rangekeeper (analog computer) and stable vertical mounted below decks in order to reduce the size and weight of the director itself.

Neosho survivors told Sims survivors that the planes which attacked the Sims were never seen to emerge from the blast of their bomb explosions.
The Sims crew attempted to patch the hole in their boat and succeeded in stopping it somewhat, but continuous bailing was still necessary.

Shapes appear accurate, There is a minimum of details on the bulkheads so I would advise picking up a set of watertight doors and other miscellaneous details.
I have several of these Sim's kits and some also come with one sprue from a Skywave E-6 weapons sprue.
Two of the five inch turrets are cast in resin and the other two are to be taken from the above mentioned sprue.

Walke was rebuilt and refitted similar to Sims.
She lasted a few months longer than Sims, being lost in September 1942 after a refit that gave her a slightly different AA fit.
This kit can also be used to build USS O'Brien.
