Following operations along the Pacific coast during much of 1911, South Dakota began a cruise in December with the Armored Cruiser Squadron which took her from California to the Hawaiian Islands, the Marianas, the Philippines, and Japan.
South Dakota was renamed Huron on 7 June 1920 and was designated CA-9 on 17 July 1920.
She was sold on 11 February 1930 for scrapping in accordance with the provisions of the London Naval Treaty for the limitation and reduction of naval armament.

The inboard destroyer, with the distorted bow, is probably USS Mahan (DD-364), which was damaged in a collision with South Dakota at the close of the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands on 27 October 1942.
South Dakota received damage in both that battle and in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on 15 November 1942.

The federal official route log for US-12 defined the South Dakota segment as: "Beginning at the Minnesota-South Dakota State line west of Ortonville via Wilbank (sic), Summit, Aberdeen, Selby, Mobridge, McLaughlin, McIntosh to the South Dakota-North Dakota State line east of Lemmon", which is basically where it runs today.
In 1998, when legislation was first introduced in the South Dakota legislature to authorize the US-16 Bypass in Rapid City, it was proposed to extend east to Box Elder, along the old US-14/US-16 alignment.
The original alignment continued south to what is now SD-46 near Centerville; this segment (south of SD-44) was decommissioned in the 1990's.
