South Dakota returned to the United States soon thereafter and was decommissioned in January 1947.
The inboard destroyer, with the distorted bow, is probably USS Mahan (DD-364), which was damaged in a collision with South Dakota at the close of the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands on 27 October 1942.
South Dakota received damage in both that battle and in the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal on 15 November 1942.

The South Dakota or SoDak as she was nicknamed was unique among her sisters in that she only had eight twin 5" gun mounts.
Understandably this created some bad blood among the crew of the USS Washington as they were not allowed to be memtioned as the hero's that they were while they were still in the war zone.

I started by reducing The Floating Drydock 1/192d scale South Dakota and Massachusetts drawings (1945 configurations) and enlarging a side photo view of the South Dakota (1942) to 1/350th scale at a local print shop.
These, in conjunction with the enlarged South Dakota/Prometheus and the The U.S. Naval Institute July 1942 overhead stern photos, allowed me to determine dimensional specifics for items not shown on the drawings.
I would find a common object/item (e.g., bulkhead height) on the photos and the model and used a proportional approach to approximate the size/location on the model.
