 USS St. Louis (CL-49) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Louis (CL-49), the lead ship of her class of light cruiser, was the fifth ship of the United States Navy named after the city of St.
Louis completed shakedown on 6 October; then commenced Neutrality Patrol operations which, during the next 11 months, took her from the West Indies into the North Atlantic.
Louis was laid down on 10 December 1936 by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company, Newport News, Va.; launched on 15 April 1938; sponsored by Miss Nancy Lee Morrill; and commissioned on 19 May 1939, Captain Charles H. Morrison in command.

USS St. Louis (CL-49) Earned Her 11 Battle Stars in the Asiatic/Pacific Area Campaign.
Louis was taken under fire by shore batteries 3 times, and silenced them 3 times, underwent 88 air alerts in cluding 11 attacks on the St. Louis herself by the newly formed Kamikaze Corps, participated in 88 shore bombardments and splashed 4 enemy planes with 4 assists.
Although damaged, the St. Louis was obliged to fall to with her AA batteries the night of 29 November as she was beginning her withdrawl from the gulf.

Included were repairs to such men-of-war as USS Saratoga (CV-3) (torpedoed by I-26 on 31 August); USS South Dakota (BB-57) (damaged from grounding at Lahai Passage, Tonga Islands, on 6 September); and USS North Carolina (BB-55) (torpedo damage suffered on 15 September).
Her biggest repair job of that time was the light cruiser USS Reno (CL-96), torpedoed off San Bernardino Strait by Japanese submarine I-41 on the night of 3 November.
On 6 December 1941, she was moored alongside USS Arizona (BB-39), at berth F 7, off Ford Island, to provide services to the battleship during her scheduled period of tender upkeep between 6 and 12 December.

Louis continued her humanitarian duties at Constantinople and at Anatolian ports during the time of unrest caused by the Russian Civil War and the Turkish Revolution.
In reserve until struck from the Navy list on 20 March 1930, St. Louis' hulk was sold for scrapping on 13 August in accordance with the provisions of the London Treaty for the limitation and reduction of naval armament.
The fourth St. Louis, Cruiser No. 20, was launched on 6 May 1905 by Neafie and Levy Co., Philadelphia Pa.; sponsored by Miss Gladys Bryant Smith, and commissioned on 18 August 1906, Captain Nathaniel R. Usher in command.

The Allied forces consist of the light cruisers HMNZS Leander, USS Honolulu (CL-48) and USS St. Louis (CL-49) and ten destroyers; the Japanese force consists of the light cruiser HIJMS Jintsu and five destroyers.
USS Honolulu is struck by a torpedo on the starboard side at 0211 hours causing hull damage; USS St. Louis took a torpedo which hit well forward and twisted her bow, but caused no serious casualties; and USS Gwin received a torpedo hit amidships in her engine room.
USS Honolulu, USS St. Louis and the destroyer USS Gwin (DD-433), manouevring to bring their main batteries to bear on the enemy, turn right into the path of the deadly "long lance" torpedoes.

Later that week, the USS St. Louis lost part of it's bow when Japanese destroyers hit the ship with a torpedo at the Battle of Kolombangara.

When the St. Louis descended the ways at Newport News, Va., in 1938, the country that built her was at peace with the world.
An enemy aircraft that the St. Louis failed to bag raked the ship with machine gun bullets, three of which still remain where they were planted—in the forward stack, in the face plate of the No. 1 5-inch gun mount, and in the fantail.
The St. Louis was made an addition to that power for the intensive shelling that preceded the June 14 landings of American troops on Saipan.

USS Saint Louis, first of a class of two 10,000-ton light cruisers, was built at Newport News, Virginia.
Louis provided gunfire support for troops ashore on Okinawa and escorted the fast carriers during their attacks on the Japanese home islands and elsewhere in the western Pacific.
Louis moved north to participate in the campaign to seize the Mariana Islands, bombarding Japanese positions ashore on Saipan, and later on Guam.

While USS Ranger (CV-4), USS Wasp (CV-7), and the recently commissioned USS Hornet (CV-8) remained in the Atlantic, Yorktown departed Norfolk on 16 December 1941 and sailed for the Pacific, her secondary gun galleries studded with new 20-millimeter Oerlikon machine guns.
On 28 October, while Yorktown, the battleship USS New Mexico (BB 40), and other American warships were screening a convoy, a destroyer picked up a submarine contact and dropped depth charges while the convoy itself made an emergency starboard turn, the first of the convoy's three emergency changes of course.
Picked up by the destroyer USS Hammann (DD-412), Buckmaster was transferred to USS Astoria (CA-34) soon thereafter and reported to Rear Admiral Fletcher, who had shifted his flag to the heavy cruiser after the first dive-bombing attack.

Louis, Phelps, Blue and Lamson remained in company until they joined Commander Destroyers, Battle Force at 1321.
Louis they then boarded the Phoenix, that was passing at that time, and served at sea on board that ship until December 10th.
At 1130 when in position latitude 20°-56'-30", longitude 157°-52'-00" a despatch was received stating that the enemy carrier and four escort vessels was in a position bearing due west of this vessel, distance thirty miles.

Leander was badly damaged by a torpedo in the opening moments of the action, then the failure to promptly identify the destroyers of the Japanese escort force allowed them to reach a position to launch torpedoes that blew up the destroyer USS Gwin (DD 433) and damaged the cruisers USS Honolulu and USS St. Louis.
USS San Francisco was severely damaged and several other vessels, Japanese and American, more or less so.
The USS Salt Lake City was finally disabled, but Japanese Vice Adm. Hosogaya has had enough and broke off the action.
