USS Underhill (DE-682), a Buckley-class destroyer escort, was named in honor of Ensign Samuel Underhill, a naval aviator of the United States Navy who was killed in action during the Battle of the Coral Sea.
Chief Boatswain's Mate Stanley Dace was in the fire room leading a damage control party that was repairing damage from the depth charge attack on the first sub when Underhill struck the kaiten.
USS Underhill was struck from the Naval Vessel Registry on 1 September 1945.

With the assistance of Senator Kit Bond and his staff and the persistence of Cheryl Jones, daughter of the late Stanley Dace, chief boatswain's mate of the Underhill, the commendation is now reality.
It is highly appropriate that this citation of merit be presented to the crew which manned the guns and protected the convoy enroute to the Philippines," wrote Senator Bond.
Dace, a former resident of Sullivan, died in November 1995.

Dace departed Midway on her second war patrol on January 7th, 1944, assigned to support "Operation Hailstorm," the designated name for the upcoming carrier strike on the island of Truk.
At eight o'clock in the evening on the 20th, when Dace surfaced to disembark Harris and his men, Japanese truck headlights and searchlights were seen on the beach, so she went around to the other side of the island, and the guerrillas went ashore in two groups.

The USS Underhill 682 was launched on October 15, 1943, at the Bethlehem Steel Company's Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, Massachusetts, after Christening ceremonies on this date.
The convoy consisted of one troopship, the USS Adria, the six LST's carrying remnants of the United States Army's 96th Division, war-weary survivors going to the Philippines for much deserved rest and reinforcements.
While the USS Underhill 682 and 112 of her men had been lost, she had accomplished her mission -- that of delivering her convoy safely to its destination.

She and I spoke on the phone several times when I worked for Donald Bellisario on the TV show "JAG." I am reading about the USS Indianapolis - the sinking of the Underhill is mentioned and I thought of her.
I am the granddaughter of Thomas F. Patterson, he served on the USS Underhill, and thankfully was able to be named on the survivor list he has now passed away.
