 USS Steamer Bay CVE-87
The STEAMER BAY was detached from Task Unit 52.2.1 and departed the Iwo Jima area for Leyte in the Philippines on 7 March, in company with the EDMONDS (DE406) and the HELM (DD388), in compliance with despatch orders from commander Task Force FIFTY-ONE, (OTC, Commanding Officer, STEAMER BAY).
The Commanding Officer of the STEAMER BAY was the acting CTU 51.13.3 from the time this unit was formed on 15 March until relieved by Captain J. Peterson in the SANTEE on his arrival 24 March.
Throughout this engagement the STEAMER BAY operated either with CVE Group ONE, TWO or THREE, except for the periods of ammunition replenishment at Kerama Retto or fuel replenishment from the oilers in the fueling areas.

 USS Steamer Bay CVE-87
The STEAMER BAY then became part of Task Group 77.4 (Rear Admiral Felix F. Stump in NATOMA BAY, OTC) whose mission was to operate with the Luzon Covering Group (Task Group 77.3, Read Admiral R. Berkey, U.S.N.) to engage any surface forces Japan might send to aid her beleaguered forces on Luzon.
From 29 to 31 January the STEAMER BAY, in company with Task Group 77.4 provided air cover for the amphibious invasion at San Felipe and San Antonio in the Zambales Province of Southwest Luzon, the object of which was the capture of Subic Bay and the isolation of Bataan Peninsula.
Throughout Iwo Jima engagement the STEAMER BAY operated with the task unit to which she was originally assigned, although the assignment of the other vessels in this task unit changed from time to time as the tactical situation required.

 USS Steamer Bay CVE-87
The U.S.S. (CVE-87) was commissioned on 4 April 1944 by the CVE Commissioning Detail at the U.S. Naval Station in Astoria, Oregon.
At the time that the STEAMER BAY was commissioned the KAISER Ship Building Company had begun to incorporate most of the changes found necessary in the earlier ships of this class prior to delivery to the CVE Commissioning Detail at Astoria.
After a fitting-out period of about three weeks the STEAMER BAY departed from Astoria on 25 April for Puget Sound, where the ship was depermed and degaussed, the radio director finder, magnetic compass and pitometer log were calibrated, structural test and practice firing were conducted, and bombs, ammunition, and torpedoes were loaded.

The STEAMER BAY was stricken from the Navy list on March 1, 1959, and was sold to Hyman-Michaels Co. of Chicago on August 29, 1959, for scrap.
Of the six carriers, OMMANEY BAY (CVE 79) was sunk on 4 January by a kamikaze plane; and MANILA BAY (CVE 61) and SAVO ISLAND (CVE 78) were damaged the next day.
Her designation was changed from CVE 87 to CVHE 87 on 12 June 1955.

Task Group 9.7, composed of the NASSAU, USS KITTYHAWK (AKV 1) and USS BARKER, with Captain Doyle as Group Commander, departed San Francisco on October 14, and reached Pearl Harbor on the 20th.There the aircraft, carried as cargo, were removed and some minor repairs and installations were effected.
Upon entering San Francisco Bay, she was directed to proceed to the Mare Island Navy Yard for extensive overhaul.
On February 23, the NASSAU transferred to the NATOMA BAY all her planes that were in first-class condition and took aboard the NATOMA BAY'S damaged planes.

USS Woodworth (DD-460), Benson-class destroyer in World War II Woodworth, Benson- (Bristol-)class DD 460, was built with Laffey at San Francisco.
On 28 May, she and Henley (DD 553) escorted Natoma Bay (CVE 62) to Kerama Retto, Okinawa Shima where Woodworth underwent repairs until 6 June.
On 22 August, she was then assigned to a task unit organized around Rear Admiral Thomas L. Sprague in Ticonderoga (CVA 14) which was charged with providing air coverage for the first occupation force to go to the Japanese homeland.

At one point, she and the JOHN D. (DD-553) escorted the escort carrier NATOMA BAY (CVE-62), which was later crashed by a kamikaze.

 Sword 1/48 FM-2 Wildcat
I wanted to model a plane that flew off of my father's ship, the USS Steamer Bay CVE-87, a World War II Escort Carrier on which he was Catapult Officer.
They incorrectly note that VC-93 flew from the USS Petrof Bay in June of 1945.
I found a picture on their website of FM-2 #9 flown by Oliver Dennett, so that's the one I used (turned the set's #6 upside down!) I found several photos of their planes on the website that do not show a cloverleaf on the wing (as shown in Aeromaster's drawing) so I left it off.
