Steelhead (SS-280) was laid down on the Portsmouth (N.H.) Navy Yard, launched on 11 September 1942; sponsored by Mrs.
Upon concluding the patrol when she arrived at Pearl Harbor on 16 August, Steelhead was routed to the west coast for a much needed overhaul.
Steelhead began her last war patrol on 13 May. She performed lifeguard duty in the Caroline Islands and later patrolled in the Tokyo Bay area.

USS Steelhead, a 1525-ton Gato class submarine built by the Portsmouth Navy Yard, was commissioned in December 1942.
In June-August 1944 she was teamed with USS Hammerhead (SS-364) and USS Parche (SS-384) to operate as a "wolf-pack" in the waters between the Philippines and Formosa.
Steelhead participated in a successful attack on an enemy convoy at the end of July and was credited with sinking two and a half ships.

A tall, genial redhead, Ramage was born in Monroe Bridge, Massachusetts on 19 January 1909 and graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1931.
Parche departed Pearl Harbor on her first war patrol in March 1944, teamed with USS Bang (SS-385) and USS Tinosa (SS-283) to form a "wolf pack" preying on Japanese shipping in the Luzon Strait, between Taiwan and the northern Philippines.
USS Parche (SS-384), a member of the mid-war USS Balao (SS-285) class, was built at the Portsmouth (New Hampshire) Navy Yard and launched on 24 July 1943.

The first USS Gato (SS-212) was a submarine in the United States Navy.
On her first war patrol from Pearl Harbor (20 April - 10 June 1942), she unsuccessfully attacked an converted aircraft carrier 3 May before being driven away by the fierce depth charging of four destroyers off the Marshalls.
On 24 May she was ordered to patrol the western approaches to Midway, taking station 280 miles westward during that historic victory.
