 DD-479 DANFS
The second Stevens (DD-479) was laid down on 30 December 1941 at Charleston, S.C., by the Charleston Navy Yard, Iaunched on 24 June 1942 co-sponsored by Mrs.
Stevens guarded that convoy to Lingayen, arriving on the 9th and remaining until the 13th.
Stevens decommissioned on 2 July 1946 and remained with the Pacific Reserve Fleet until 1 December 1972 when her name was struck from the Navy list.

Stevens was appointed lighthouse inspector for the llth Treasury District.
Stevens was promoted to commodore on 19 February 1873, to date from 20 November 1872, and was assigned to the Norfolk Navy Yard—first as commanding officer, then on a special assignment related to Norfolk harbor.

Stevens, the son of Captain Thomas Holdup Stevens (1795 – 1841) was born in Middletown, Connecticut, on 27 May 1819.
Between 1842 and 1855, Stevens served at various posts ashore, among which were two tours on coast survey duty, one tour as acting master of USS Michigan (1843) during her construction and 30 months as storekeeper in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Stevens was promoted to Commodore (rank) on 19 February 1873, to date from 20 November 1872, and was assigned to the Norfolk Navy Yard —first as commanding officer, then on a special assignment related to Norfolk, Virginia harbor.

As one of the measures taken to achieve this end, Wilson - together with Sterett (DD-407) and Lang (DD- 399) and screening Mississippi (BB-41) and Savannah (CL- 43)secretly departed the Hawaiian operating area on 19 May, ostensibly for local maneuvers.
The first intimation of trouble came at 0310 on the 28th, when Stevens (DD-479) reported a bogey at 11 miles and closing.
Resuming her patrol station off Mangarin Bay two hours later, steaming between Philip (DD- 498) and Gansevoort, Wilson went to general quarters at 1540 when Gansevoort reported a bogey in the vicinity.

Although the box says it's a scale model of the USS Kidd the plans included are for the USS Fletcher.
The Stevens was one of three Fletcher Class Destroyers modified to carry an OS2N-I Kingfisher floatplane on a catapult instead of the number 3, 5-inch gun during World War II.
After that I painted the hull to match the Measure 21 used on the USS Stevens.

Here on the right is the USS Tattnall (DDG-19), after modifications by the Navy that added a second bow sonar dome.

 Sam J. Glanzman's USS Stevens
The list below is a chronological listing of the 65 USS Stevens stories I know of (that count includes the two full length "A Sailor's Story" graphic novels published by Marvel in the 1980s, the "Of War and Peace" stories from Savage Tales and the story published in 1992).
Streetwise, 2000, an anthology of autobiographical comic stories published by TwoMorrows, has a 10 page Glanzman story ("Cook's Tour") about other parts of his life, including the time creating the USS Stevens story, specifically how he came to do "Color Me Brave".
If you know of any other appearances of DD 479 in those stories or covers, please let me know.

Decided that ships having been in harbor once, need only be supplied with charts that would be passed to them by heaving line prior to entrance; others would be led through entrance by WINTLE and just inside supplied them with pilots and charts.
On 10 Nov proceed to area off Denges Passage, Palau Islands to relieve USS BUCHANAN and star shells over Denges Passage and Ngeregoug Island to provide illumination for infantry Landing Craft patrolling close in to the island.
On 3 May 1945 identical service for Wotje and on 5 May away for Jaluit Atoll to evacuate as many natives as possible, possibly 1200 living there living under bad conditions due to lack of sufficient food, medical supplies lies and mistreatment by Japanese.
