Sturgeon was at sea again on 28 December 1941 en route to the Tarakan area, off the coast of Borneo.
Sturgeon fired a spread from her forward tubes which resulted in a large explosion on the transport, and her screws stopped turning.
Sturgeon was routed to California for an overhaul and arrived at San Francisco on 15 August.

 USS Sturgeon (SSN-637) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Sturgeon (SSN-637), the lead ship of her class of nuclear attack submarine, was the third ship of the United States Navy to be named for the sturgeon, a large, bony-plated fish with an elongated body that is an important source of caviar and isinglass.
Sturgeon participated in fleet submarine exercises in August and September and in a project for the Chief of Naval Operations from 29 September to 31 October.
Sturgeon was decommissioned on 1 August 1994 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 1 August 1994.

USS Holland (AS-3) was the submarine tender for the squadron.
On 10 December 1941, USS Ortolan (ASR-5) steamed west from the west coast of the United States, and, eleven days later, arrived at Pearl Harbor...to assist in the staggering salvage effort, which was the aftermath of the surprise Japanese attack two weeks earlier.
USS Ortolan (ASR-5) was decommissioned on 18 March 1947; struck from the Navy List on 10 June 1947; and transferred to the United States Maritime Commission for subsequent disposal.

USS Sturgeon, a 1449-ton Salmon class submarine built at the Mare Island Navy Yard, California, was commissioned in June 1938.
USS Sturgeon was decommissioned in mid-November 1945 and sold for scrapping in June 1948.
USS Sturgeon (SS-187) is immediately beyond Stingray, with the wakes further in the distance probably belonging to USS Seal (SS-183) and USS Salmon (SS-182).

USS STURGEON was the first ship in the STURGEON - class of nuclear powered attack submarines.
Named after the large, bony-plated fish with an elongated body which is found in both fresh and salt water, especially in the North Temperate Zone, and which is an important source of caviar and isinglass, the USS STURGEON was the third ship in the Navy to bear the name.
Recycling of the USS STURGEON was completed on December 11, 1995.

USS STURGEON (SSN637) was the third ship of the line to bear the name STURGEON and the lead ship of 37 nuclear fast attack submarines of the Sturgeon-class.
STURGEON departed Groton, Connecticut in April 1967 and conducted her shakedown cruise down the east coast with ports of call in Norfolk, Virginia, Charleston, South Carolina, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, St. Croix in the American Virgin Islands, and Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico.
STURGEON was again deployed from June to September 1990 and was awarded the Battle "E," Engineering "E," ASW "A," and the Supple "E" for that fiscal year.

Right up to the last 637 deployment by USS L. Mendel Rivers (SSN-686) in late 2000, these submarines were the backbone of Arctic submarine operations.
The theme of the exercise was to evaluate and improve the Arctic operability of all three, and USS Oklahoma City (SSN-723), Scranton, and Connecticut deployed this summer with that goal in mind.

Hit by bombs and aerial torpedoes from Avenger aircraft from the carrier USS Belleau Wood, part of the U.S. Task Force 38, she was set on fire after a tremendous blast from leaking aviation fuel.
The bow section was sunk by gunfire from the USS Louisville and the stern section sank half an hour later after having drifted with the current for some distance.
Enroute to the safety of the Inland Sea to conduct her sea trials, she was spotted by the American submarine USS Archer-Fish commanded by Joseph F. Enright USN.
