USS Swordfish (SSN-579), a Skate-class submarine[?], was the second submarine of the United States Navy named for the swordfish, a large fish with a long, swordlike beak and a high dorsal fin.
Swordfish continued operating from Pearl Harbor, on local operations and on deployments to the western Pacific, as a member of Submarine Division 71 until 30 June 1965 when she was assigned to SubDiv 11 which was also based there.
Swordfish was decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Registry on 2 June 1989.

Russian officials long have suspected that the Soviet sub K-129 was struck by an American submarine, the USS Swordfish.
Russian suspicions about the Swordfish are based on records indicating it underwent nighttime repair of a bent periscope at Yokosuka, Japan, on March 17 – six days after the K-129 sank.
The U.S. explanation is that the Swordfish collided with an ice pack and was 2,000 miles away from the Russian sub when it sank.

USS Wahoo (SS 238), was lost on it's 7th war patrol to enemy action on Oct. 11, 1943, in Laperouse Strait and USS Tang (SS-306), was lost on it's 5th war patrol, sunk by it's own torpedo, on Oct. 25, 1944.
