After a time-consuming search for a translator, the ketch's papers and the testimony of an English ship master who had been in Tripoli to witness her role in operations against Philadelphia convinced the commander of the American squadron, Commodore Edward Preble, that Mastico was a legitimate prize.

The USS Syren was built in Philadelphia in 1803 by Benjamin Hutton.
The siren figure, included in the original plan, was changed after the boat was captured in 1812, as well as some other elements afore, as can been seen in the plan on page 185 of the book written by Chapelle.
The Syren had a 93-feet length between perpendiculars, 27 feet in breadth and 12 feet 6 inches in draught.

Buried by American prisoners from the captured frigate USS Philadelphia, Somers, two other officers – Lt. Henry Wadsworth (Uncle of Longfellow), Charles Israel, and ten sailors and marines were laid to rest a few hundred yards east of the old Bashaw’s castle, now a museum.

On December 14, 1803, he was assigned to the "Enterprise", a 12-gun schooner.
The "Enterprise" along with the "Constitution" was sent out to either retake the "Philadelphia" or destroy it so that Tripoli could not use her against the U.S. They decided it was to risky of an operation too retake her so they set her a fire.
