The third Florida was originally the screw frigate Wampanoag renamed in 1869, and sold in 1885.
A fourth USS Florida was present at the Battle of Tayacoba during the Spanish-American War in 1898.
The fifth Florida (BM-9) was a monitor commissioned in 1903, renamed to Tallahassee in 1908, and sold in 1922.

On August 1, 1910 she was placed in commission in reserve and began a regular schedule of ordnance experimentation and occasional duty in the Panama Canal Zone and Norfolk area as a submarine tender.
Tallahassee was assigned to the 6th Naval District as a reserve training ship from February 19, 1920, serving in commissioned status from September 3, 1920 to March 24, 1922.
Tallahassee was redesignated as IX-16 on July 20, 1921 and decommissioned for the final time on March 24, 1922.

The ship launched as CV 22 on 22 Aug. 1942 by New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J. This was the first of nine light carriers of her class constructed on Cleveland class cruiser hulls.
The ship was originally laid down as Tallahassee (CL 61) by the New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J. She was reclassified as CV 23 on Feb. 16, 1942, and renamed Princeton on Mar. 31, 1942.
She was converted while building and was launched Apr. 4, 1943, by the New York Shipbuilding Corp., Camden, N.J. Aug. 16, 1943 - USS Intrepid (CV 11) commissioned in Norfolk, Va., Captain Thomas L. Sprague in command.

The USS MEMPHIS was swamped and washed ashore by a tsunami in the Dominican Republic in August 1915.

TallahaSsee returned to the Washington Navy Yard for removal of the 6-inch gun and underwent repairs at Norfolk into the month of November 1912.
Recommissioned on 3 August 1920, Tallahassee was redesignated as IX-16 on 20 July 1921 and decommissioned for the final time on 24 March 1922.
TaUahasSee (CL-116)—a Fargo-class light cruiser —was laid down on 31 January 1944 at Newport News, Va., by the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. However, as the collapse of Japan became apparent, the contraet for her construction was cancelled on 12 August 1945, and her hull was scrapped on the ways.

Only one ship of the United States Navy has been named USS Tallahassee, after the city of Tallahasee, Florida, but two others were projected to carry the name.
The first Tallahassee (BM-10) was a monitor used as a submarine tender during World War I.
The second Tallahassee (CL-61) was converted from a light cruiser to light aircraft carrier Princeton (CVL-23) before launching.

The entire organization was subsequently mobilized on board the USS Oregon, USS San Diego, USS Huntington (4) and USS Frederich (5).
Prior to the sinking of the USS San Diego, Lt. Adolph B. Adams was transferred off the ship and assigned to the USS Tallahassee at the Panama Canal Zone (6).
The USS San Diego was the only major warship lost by the United States in World War I. A special note is the fact that the only California Naval Militiaman to died in World War I was a member of the Fifth Division, California Naval Militia.

She was built in Hayle, Cornwall, in 1858 for ferry service from there to nearby St. Ives under the house flag of the Hayle Steam Packet Co. The Confederacy bought her in the United Kingdom and she proved a very good investment, bringing 22 vital cargoes through the blockade in 1863.
Her 23rd voyage was her last; the blockader USS Niphon gave chase as she sought to run in to Wilmington, forcing Lt. Richard H. Gayle, CSN, to beach his ship 11 miles north of New Inlet; the captain, carpenter and one seaman remained on board while the officers, crew and passengers escaped to shore.
Yet she was cornered on 22 October 1864 by USS Eolus, trying to enter Cape Fear River after a sixty-five mile chase off Wilmington The capture netted more than a thousand dollars in prize money for each member of the blockader's crew.

Three things: 1) I believe he went to the Naval War College in Newport, RI shortly before the Spring of 1984, when, as an Ensign, I attended Surface Warfare Officer's School, also in Newport.
Unfortunately, I was never able to meet the man. Based on comments from those who did know him, he was very highly regarded.

USS Pontoosuc, a 1173-ton Sassacus class "double-ender" steam gunboat, was built at Portland, Maine.
Late in that year, and in January 1865, Pontoosuc was one of the large fleet that bombarded Fort Fisher during the two assaults that ultimately seized that strategic position and eliminated Wilmington, North Carolina, as a blockade running port.
With the end of the conflict, USS Pontoosuc was sent north to Boston, Massachusetts, where she decommissioned in July 1865.

USS Eolus, an 368-ton (burden) side wheel steamship, was built at Newburgh, New York, for civilian employment, but was purchased by the Navy upon completion.
During October 1864 she captured the blockade runner Hope and assisted in the capture of the Lady Sterling.
USS Eolus was sold at the beginning of August 1865 and soon began a long career as a commercial steamer.
