USS Tarbell, a 1090-ton Wickes class destroyer, was built at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Tarbell returned to commissioned service in May 1930, based as San Diego until January 1931, when she was shifted to Charleston, South Carolina.

 US Navy & the Panama Canal
The USS Lexington CV-2 was sunk during the battle of the Coral Sea during WWII.
It's namesake USS Lexington CV-16, after a distinguished career, was stationed in Pensacola, FL for many years and was "the" carrier that the Navy used for training pilots to land on aircraft carriers.
The USS Texas was decommisioned and is also available for tours in San Jacinto, TX (near Houston).

The first USS Radford (DD—120) was a Wickes class destroyer in the United States Navy during the World War I, later reclassified AG-22.
Radford was launched 5 April 1918 by Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company, Newport News, Virginia; sponsored by Miss Mary Lovell Radford; and commissioned 30 September 1918 at Norfolk Navy Yard, Lt. Comdr.
Struck from the Navy list 19 May 1936, Radford was sunk 5 August 1936 in accordance with the provisions of the London Treaty for the limitation and reduction of naval armament.

Tarbell (Destroyer No. 142) was laid down on 31 De~ember 1917 at Philadelphia, Pa., by William Cramp and Sons Ship and Engine Building Co., launched on 28 May 1918; sponsored by Miss Virgie Tarbell; and commissioned on 27 November 1918, Comdr.
Her home port was San Diego until January 1931, when it was changed to Charleston, S.C. However, she remained assigned to the same administrative organization until March when she was reassigned to Destroyer Division 3 of the Scouting Force.
Tarbell's duties remained much the same after the United States entered the conflict.

No distress signal had been sent — the radioman was killed by the first torpedo, but the burning ship was soon spotted by the destroyer USS Tarbell (DD-142) which came to investigate.
The Tarbell dropped lifeboats for the men in the water and proceeded to circle the tanker in search of the U-71.
The masts were gone by 1943 and the rest of the wreck was wire-dragged and demolished to a least depth of 43 feet in 1944.
