Tautog was refitted by Holland (AS-3) at Albany, south of Fremantle.
Tautog's assignments for her tenth war patrol took her to the cold waters of the northern Pacific near the Kuril Islands, from Paramushiro south to the main islands of Japan and the north east coast of Hokkaido.
Tautog arrived at Portsmouth, New Hampshire, on 18 November and was decommissioned on 8 December 1945.

USS Tautog (SS-199), a Tambor-class submarine, was the first ship of the United States Navy to be named for the tautog, a small edible sport fish, also called flfish or oysterfish, found on the Atlantic coast of the United States.
Tautog was back in Pearl Harbor in early December and, on 17 December, she began her 13th and last war patrol.
Plans to use Tautog as a target during atomic bomb tests at Bikini in 1946 were cancelled, and she was assigned to the Ninth Naval District on 9 May 1947 as a reserve training ship.

Bernard Clarey, a lieutenant on 7 December 1941 and executive officer of the submarine USS Dolphin, is a survivor of the Pearl Harbor attack.
USS Dolphin's duty crew had manned all our machine guns and small arms and men were shooting at the enemy planes as they passed about 400 yards astern of our position at the pier.
Admiral Clarey was largely responsible for saving USS Bowfin from being scrapped or sunk as a target, for bringing her back to Pearl Harbor, and for her eventual restoration.

One of the most successful submarines of World War II, USS Tautog (named for a North Atlantic fish) was credited with sinking 26 Japanese ships for a total of 72,606 tons—scoring first in number of ships and fourth in tonnage.
Assigned to the Pacific Fleet in 1940, Tautog was at Pearl Harbor during the Japanese attack on December 7, 1941.
Returning to the West Coast for a refit in June, after one patrol in the Caroline Islands she began a series of four patrols in Japanese home waters during which she ranged between Hokkaido in the south and the Kurile Islands in the north.

 The Dolphin - News - 02/17/2005 - USS Grayback (SS 208) February 26, 1944 - 80 Men Lost
In 1942 alone Grayback, along with four other U.S. submarines (USS Gudgeon (SS 211), USS Tautog (SS 199), USS Triton (SS 201) and USS Seadragon (SS 194)) acting independently, combined to sink 81 enemy ships from Pearl Harbor to the East China Sea.
In 1943 Cmdr. Moore assumed command of Grayback and joined two other subs (USS Shad (SS 235) and USS Cero (SS 225)) to form the first rendition of Capt. Charles "Swede" Momsen's 'wolf-pack' of Submarine Squadron Two.
Generally, submarine skippers objected to "wolf-packing." They felt operating independently was more efficient and they all lived in dread that someday this method would sooner or later result in the sinking of one friendly submarine by another.

Willingham served four previous war patrols as C.O. of USS Tautog (SS-199), sinking five enemy ships (including two submarines), for which he was awarded two Navy Crosses.
USS Bowfin's equipment was tested and personnel were trained at Portsmouth; Naval Torpedo Station, Newport, Rhode Island; and Submarine Base, New London, CT. She departed New London 1 July 1943 for Brisbane, Queensland, Australia by way of the Panama Canal.
Bowfin arrived at Brisbane 10 August 1943 and was tied up alongside USS Fulton (AS-11) for post-voyage repairs and fitting out.
