  John Thach
Thach spent the next decade serving as a test pilot and instructor and establishing a reputation as an expert in aerial gunnery.
Lieutenant Commander Thach and Fighting Squadron Three flew off of USS Lexington (CV-2) in the early part of World War II and was assigned to USS Yorktown (CV-5) during the Battle of Midway in June of 1942.
Thach was present at the formal Japanese Surrender on 2 September 1945 in Tokyo Bay.

Attending the reception were Arthur D. Hannah, governor-general of the Bahamas and Dr. Brent Hardt, charge daffaires at the U.S. Embassy in Nassau, as well as both the Chinese and Haitian ambassadors to the Bahamas.
Thach has been conducting counter-narcotics operations in the eastern Pacific since June, working closely with several countries in the NAVSO area of responsibility, assisting the law enforcement mission to intercept and detain drug traffickers on the high seas.
It is a pleasure to have USS Thach in Nassau, Hardt said.

Later in the war, Admiral Thach was assigned to the Fast Carrier Task Force as Air Operations Officer, where he developed the system of blanketing enemy airfields with a continuous patrol of carrier-based fighters.
Admiral Thach continued his distinguished career after the war, commanding the aircraft carrier USS SICILY in the Korean conflict, and later, the carrier USS FRANKLIN D. He was promoted to the rank of Rear Admiral in November of 1955, Vice Admiral in January of 1960, and to Admiral in March of 1960.

Commander Gregory Claibourn enlisted in the Navy on September 5, 1975 and upon completion of boot camp in San Diego, he was assigned to the Pre-commissioning Crew of USS PETERSON (DD 969), home ported in Norfolk as a deck seaman.
In January 1989, he reported to USS THACH (FFG 43) as First Lieutenant, where he participated in the ship's homeport shift from San Diego to Yokosuka, Japan.
In March 2002, CDR Claibourn’s next assignment was to USS NIMITZ (CVN 68) homeported in San Diego as First Lieutenant then he went on to Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay Georgia as the Port Operations Officer.

Muni Pier was a good vantage point for the Navy parade of ships and practice flights on Friday while the deck of the massive USS Constellation made up for a very limited view of the flying on Saturday with an impressive static display.
With nearly two thirds of her air wing aboard, this ship had more aircraft and in a much smaller space than a typical airshow.

During the early 1940s, while commanding Fighting Squadron Three, Thach developed the fighter combat technique that came to be known as the "Thach Weave", a tactic that enabled the generally mediocre performing U.S. fighters to hold their own against the Japanese "Zero".

Following the Iraqi air-launched Exocet attack on the USS Stark (FFG-31) on 17 May 1987 it was decided to upgrade the (V)2 installation by adding a jammer codenamed "Sidekick".
These ships have a full load displacement of that ranges from 3,658 tons to 4,100 tons, are either 445 or 453 feet in overall length, have a 45 foot beam and a draft of 22 feet.
In 1996 one FFG 7 supported Baltic Sea operations, two served in the Western Pacific for Carat 96, and three others patroled the Caribbean in counter-narcotics operations.

On Thursday Nov. 19, 1998, USS Thach (FFG-43) returned to Yokusuka, Japan following a nearly six month deployment to the Arabian Gulf.
Thach's sonar technicians and torpedomen did have an opportunity to demonstrate their skills during a week long torpedo evaluation exercise.
In total, Thach and its embarked helicopter detachment from hsl-51 launched six surface fired and air dropped mk-46 and mk-50 torpedoes.
