USS Threadfin (SS-410) is a unit of the Balao Class.
USS Threadfin had a mean draft of 15 feet 3 inches when on the surface in diving trim.
USS Threadfin was the lead ship in a Sixth Fleet Naval Review to honor the visit and inspection of the naval units by the President of the United States...Richard Nixon...who watched the demonstrations from the flight deck of an aircraft carrier.

 The USS Bushnell
USS Bushnell weighed anchor and proceeded to Majuro Atoll in the Marshall Islands on 27 April...laden with provisions, fuel, and materials.
From September to December of 1945, USS Bushnell acted as a repair vessel for submarines throughout the period of demobilization and peacetime reorganization of the Submarine Force in the San Diego, California, area.
During the spring of 1970, USS Bushnell relinquished her duties of tending submarines to USS Howard W. Gilmore (AS-16) and commenced preparations for decommissioning.

USS Threadfin (SS-410), a Balao-class submarine">Balao-class submarine, was the only ship of the United States Navy to be named for the threadfin, any of a family of fishes related to the mullets and distinguished by filamentous rays on the lower part of the pectoral fin.
Threadfin was laid down on 18 March 1944 at the Portsmouth Navy Yard in New Hampshire.
On 30 January, Threadfin sighted a large enemy patrol craft, but prudently allowed her to pass unmolested in the hope of drawing a bead on any merchant vessels for which she might be running interference.

The battleship USS Colorado (BB-45) is damaged by an explosion, the destroyer USS Ammen (DD-527) by a horizontal bomber and the submarine chaser SC-737 by grounding, all in the Okinawa area.

Departing Guam on 11 Mar 1945, USS Trigger I (SS-237), under the command of CDR D. Connole, headed for the Nansei Shoto area to conduct her twelfth war patrol during WWII.
On 25 March she was to move west and patrol between 29!N and 31!N west of the Nansei Shoto chain, remaining clear of restricted areas and outside the 100 fathom curve.
Threadfin obtained two torpedo hits on a DE and she was depth charged by accompanying escort vessels.

She was in the yards at EB after colliding with a mountain so I was able to stay in New London until we went on patrol in January 1969.
First boat was USS Sea Fox (SS-402) from 1956 to 1958, then on to USS K-3 (Bonita) where we served as an underway target for a live nuclear depth charge test in South Pacific.
Graduated from Sub School in Feb 1963 and I was assigned first to the USS Thresher, but in that time I was not a U.S.Citizen so I could not get a secret clearance and because of that I was assigned to the USS Spinax.

Threadfiners mingled with other submariners of all eras in remembering those on “eternal patrol,” while still enjoying the renewed memories of days gone by.
Sporting their blue, white and denim T-fin shirts with their blue Threadfin buttons, the Threadfin presence at Kings Bay was well-noted in both the Howard Johnsons (USSVI), and the Quality Inn (Threadfin) hospitality rooms as well as in the area’s restaurants.
He also spoke about the Navy’s last diesel boat, USS Dolphin and the possible resurrection of the USS Trout to be manned by a civilian crew.

 About Commander Sminkey
In 1952, I went to Squadron Twelve in Key West and served in USS Sennet (SS 408) for 4 1/2 years...making 1st Class on board.
In 1957, I was assigned to USS Guavina (AOSS 362)...also at the northernmost city in Cuba.
In June 1969, we transferred to Key West...where I became Executive Officer of USS Threadfin (SS 410).

 Why I Am Proud To Be A Submariner
The first one I took was aboard USS Threadfin (SS-410) on 22 February 1949.
All of these submarines were built and served in the Second World War except USS Francis Scott Key...which was a fleet ballistic missile submarine - nuclear powered - which first went to sea in 1966 - with me aboard.
Since all submariners in the U.S. Navy are volunteers, there is no problem with crew members having "problems" living in cramped quarters under sometimes difficult conditions.

Built by the Portsmouth Navy Yard, the USS Threadfin (SS-410) was commissioned on 30 August 1944.
On 28 March, the Threadfin achieved the unconfirmed destruction of a Japanese destroyer escort.
In April 1945, the Threadfin and other submarines were stationed outside the entrance to the Japanese Inland Sea to provide warning to the Allied fleet as enemy vessels sortied during the assault on Okinawa.

I was the Navigator and Operations Officer and a Lieutenant Commander at the time on the USS Grenadier (55-525).
Having come from the relatively spacious three-engine, two-battery USS Threadfin (SS-410), Grenadier had something in every little cubbyhole.
It was designed to house a crudely constructed SCUD capable of carrying two underwater swimmers to the beach for an undetected insertion or some other covert mission.
