USS Tirante (SS-420), a Tench-class submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the tirante, a silvery, enlongated "cutlass fish" found in waters off Cuba.
On 31 March, Tirante shelled and sank a 70-ton lugger with five-inch and 40-millimeter gunfire and, on 1 April, missed an LST-type vessel with a spread of three torpedoes.
Tirante resumed her relentless prowling of the Yellow Sea between Quelpart Island (Cheju Do) and the mouth of the Yangtze River.

was a Tench-class (SS-417) Diesel-powered submarine, named for the Tirante, or "Tyrant Fish," which is a voracious, agile, thin-bodied fish with a wedge-shaped head, a large mouth, and a fierce row of canine teeth, suitable for catching and holding prey.
William D. Benson, USN, skipper of the Tirante, carved the pattern from which the figurehead was cast when he learned that the shipyard would charge more for the work than his budget could afford.
SUBRON 12 was dissolved in September 1945 and was resurrected in Key West, Florida in July 1952, with USS Bushnell (AS-15) as the squadron repair/support tender, which also had the squadron staff embarked.

In the summer of 1945, with targets hard to come by, Tirante (Street) was patrolling off Kyushu.
When the second torpedo missed, the gunners saw the wake and began firing at Tirante's periscope.
The Tirante then surfaced and cleared the harbor at high speed while being fired upon by several Jap guns of various sizes.

Once clear of the harbor patrols, TIRANTE surfaced and the crew manned their deck gun, knowing there was a good chance that they would have to fight their way out of the harbor.
