Tirante resumed her relentless prowling of the Yellow Sea between Quelpart Island (Cheju Do) and the mouth of the Yangtze.

Tirante had resumed patrolling the East China Sea between Shanghai and Quelpart Island south of Korea when new intelligence arrived reporting that an important transport had anchored with its escorts in a confined harbor on the northern coast of the island.
USS Tirante (SS-420) was launched on 9 August 1944 at the Portsmouth (New Hampshire) Navy Yard and commissioned on 6 November that same year.

The conflagration clearly illuminated Tirante and alerted the Mikura-class escort vessel Nomi and Kaibokan No. 31 which immediately got underway toward the invading submersible.

USS Tang's (SS-306) fifth war patrol was along the East China coast in October 1944.
This was the hunting ground that USS Tirante (SS-420) under the command of George L. Street III invaded along the shore of the Yellow Sea.
When the USS S-4 (SS-109) sank off Provencetown in the hook of Cape Cod in December of 1927, it became one of the most heartbreaking efforts at rescue in the annals of the sea.

HISTORY OF The USS Ulysses S. Grant (SSBN 631) was the fourteenth of the Lafayette Class of Fleet Ballistic Missile Submarines to be built by Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation at Groton, CT. General Dynamics was awarded the contract on 20, July 1961.
The primary mission of the USS Grant was to present a hidden underwater missile-launching platform and thus represent a very powerful deterrent force to any hostile nation.
Early in 1992, the USS Grant again transited the Panama Canal on it’s way to Puget Sound Naval Shipyard where she was deactivated after 27.9 years of service.

After shaking her attackers, TIRANTE surfaced and received an urgent message concerning a transport and 2 MIKURA class frigates (the best ASW ships the enemy had) in the anchorage at Cheju on the north shore of Quelpart Island, 60 miles south of Korea.
Once clear of the harbor patrols, TIRANTE surfaced and the crew manned their deck gun, knowing there was a good chance that they would have to fight their way out of the harbor.

USS SEA OWL (SS-405) transited the Panama Canal and arrived at Pearl Harbor on 23 October 1944.
She was off Wake Island early on the morning of 18 April and sent a Japanese submarine of the RO-35 class to the bottom.
This patrol was concentrated in the Yellow and East China seas and was devoted to both lifeguard duties and offensive patrol.

He then hauled the Tirante fish out of the water (with the help of a compatriot), stashed it under the superstructure, put his dungarees on, and hauled ass with his buddy up to the bridge before the crew got there.
Not long after the guy who took the Tirante fish into the water got out of the brig he disappeared from a nearby beach.
I never heard if the guy was ever found before I left TIRANTE in March 1962 to head to Nuke School.

I SERVED ON THE USS HALFBEAK (SS-352) FROM 66-69 AND ON THE USS BLENNY (SS-324) FROM EARLY 69 UNTIL SHE WAS DECOMMISSIONED.

 Edward L. "Ned" Beach, author and submarine commander.
Those who met him must have thought that he was a total no-nonsense guy, but he was really quite funny at times.
He was a submarine officer during World War II and while serving as Executive Officer (XO) aboard USS TIRANTE (SS 420), he earned the Navy Cross for his part in the attack on a Japanese tanker full of AvGas in Quelpart Harbor.
He got his command, but as he was headed for his patrol area, the Japanese surrendered and the war was over before he could get into combat as a submarine commander.
