Torsk departed New London, Connecticut, for the Pacific on February 11, 1945 and five weeks later arrived in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii via the Panama Canal.
After firing a torpedo, Torsk dove to 400 feet and rigged for "silent running." When no explosion was heard, a Mark 27 homing torpedo was fired at the sound of the frigate's propeller.
In 1967, after an all-time record of 11,884 career dives, Torsk was retired from the active fleet to become a training vessel for the naval reserve.

USS Torsk (SS-423) was laid down on 7 June 1944 at the Portsmouth (New Hampshire) Navy Yard, christened by Mrs.
As the freighter entered the harbor half an hour later, USS Torsk attempted to sink her but was unsuccessful, possibly because torpedoes fired at the merchantman struck undetected reefs near the mouth of the harbor.
USS Torsk departed the Marianas on 10 September, proceeded to New London, Connecticut, via Pearl Harbor and the Panama Canal...arriving at that submarine base in mid-October.

Torsk’s primary assignment on this, her first, patrol was to serve as lifeguard for B-29s making raids on the Japanese empire.
On 4 March 1968 Torsk, at the ripe old age of 24, was decommissioned at the Boston Navy Yard and assigned to the U.S. Naval Reserve as a pierside training submarine at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC.
On September 26, 1972 she was transferred to the State of Maryland, and on May 1, 1973 Torsk was established as the Maryland Submarine Memorial, and berthed in Baltimore.

As the commissioning COB for USS SARGO (SSN 583) Leroy Ingles' career was as illustrious as that of the SARGO.

I read the Spring 2004 issue today while doing Docent duty on USS Pampanito (SS-383), the museum submarine in San Francisco.
I am a former submariner having served on USS Torsk (SS-423), USS Andrew Jackson (SSBN-619)(G) and USS Tecumseh (SSBN-628)(B) from 1963 to 1969.
The article on Tom Nutter on page 11 was of particular interest since I served with him on USS Torsk during the period 1963 to 1965.
