  USS Tortuga (LSD-46) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Tortuga (LSD-46) is a Whidbey Island-class dock landing ship of the United States Navy.
She was the second Navy ship to be named for the Dry Tortugas, a group of desert coral islets 60 miles west of Key West, Fla., which were discovered in 1513 by Spanish explorer Ponce de Leon.
As of 2005, Tortuga is commanded by CDR Mark H. Scovill, homeported at NAB Little Creek, Virginia, and assigned to Amphibious Group 2 of the Atlantic Fleet.

Tortuga has had the distinction of being the first U.S. Naval vessel to land a Romanian helicopter while visiting the European nation, and being the last ship to conduct evolutions at fleet training group Guantanamo Bay.

Two Dock Landing Ships of the United States Navy have been named USS Tortuga, after the Dry Tortugas islands off Florida.
The first Tortuga (LSD-26) was commissioned in 1945, in action during the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and decomissioned in 1970.
The second Tortuga (LSD-46) was commissioned in 1990 and is on active service as of 2004.

USS TORTUGA is the sixth Dock Landing Ship in the WHIDBEY ISLAND class and the third ship in that class built by Avondale in New Orleans.
Construction of the TORTUGA began in September of 1986 at Avondale Shipyard in New Orleans.
TORTUGA was safely floated the next morning but remained at anchor while divers conducted an underwater inspection of the hull.

The contract for the Tortuga was awarded on Nov 26, 1984 and her keel was laid on Mar 23, 1987.
In April 1996, the Tortuga along with the Portland, Guam and Trenton assisted the 22nd MEU in a deployment to Liberia from the Mediterranean Sea.
This was the fifth and final exercise that the Tortuga had taken part in during her 1998 Med deployment.

As USS Fort McHenry left India Basin here Thursday for the last time as a Forward Deployed Naval Forces ship, the lifeblood of the ship, its crew, remained behind in Sasebo to man that port’s newest resident — the almost-identical USS Tortuga.
Tortuga’s crew now is aboard the Fort McHenry, which is headed soon to its new home in Virginia.
Michael T. Talaga, Tortuga’s skipper, said, “We completed earlier than expected because the crews of both ships started communications very early and focused on priority items.” An administrative exchange-of-command took place Wednesday afternoon on the flight deck of the Tortuga, which now officially is part of the FDNF.

The USS Tortuga LSD (26) sailed for Vietnamese waters on 1 March 1966, arrived at Vung Tau on 18 April, and relieved Belle Grove (LSD-2) as support ship for "Game Warden" -- the Navy's operation designed to interdict the flow of communist supplies along the coastlines of South Vietnam.
