USS Tuscaloosa (LST-1187), the 9th ship of the Newport-class of tank landing ships, is the second ship of the United States Navy to be named after the city of Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Tuscaloosa (LST-1187) was laid down on 23 November 1968 at San Diego, California by the National Steel and Shipbuilding Co. She was launched on 6 September 1969 sponsored by Mrs.
Tuscaloosa later participated in Operation Pagasa II in conjunction with units of the Philippine Navy and operated out of Subic Bay for the remainder of the year with calls at Hong Kong and Kaohsiung, Taiwan on her itinerary.

The next day, TUSCALOOSA and her screen--which by that time consisted of three destroyers (two American and one British)--were spotted by a snooping German reconnaissance plane.
TUSCALOOSA embarked troops at Guadalcanal, moved to the Russell Islands where she took on more passengers, and arrived at Noumea on New Year's Day 1946.

USS Tuscaloosa, a 9975-ton New Orleans class heavy cruiser, was built at Camden, New Jersey, and commissioned in August 1934.
Tuscaloosa continued her Atlantic area Neutrality Patrols in 1940 and 1941 and also took part in exercises.
With her Atlantic area assignments concluded, Tuscaloosa was transferred to the Pacific, where her big guns bombarded the Japanese during the Iwo Jima invasion in February 1945 and the Okinawa operation in March-June.

His marriage to Bess Louise Owen, a Fostoria girl, took place Aug. 2, 1919, aboard the USS Columbia, the ship to which he was assigned for three years after graduation from the academy.
