USS Twiggs (DD-591), a Fletcher-class destroyer, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for Marine Major Levi Twiggs (1793–1847).
Twiggs was laid down on 20 January 1943 at Charleston, S.C., by the Charleston Navy Yard; launched on 7 April 1943; sponsored by Mrs.
Twiggs was struck from the Navy list on 11 July 1945; and, in 1957, her hulk was donated to the government of the Ryukyu Islands.

Twiggs sortied from Kossol Roads on 1 January 1946 protecting a large task force intended for the invasion of Luzon.
On 16 June, Twiggs was on radar picket duty off Senaga Shima in the western fire support area At 2030, a single, low-flying plane dropped a torpedo which hit Twiggs on her port side, exploding her number 2 magazine.
Twiggs was struck from the Navy list on 11 July 1946; and, in 1967, her hulk was donated to the government of the Ryukyu Islands.

The destroyer USS Pritchett (DD-561) is damaged by horizontal bomber; the destroyer escort USS Foreman (DE-633) by dive bomber; and the attack transports USS Chilton (APA-38), USS Henrico (APA-45), USS Goodhue (APA-107) and USS Telfair (APA-210) and LST 599 are damaged by suicide plane, all in the Okinawa area.
The battleship USS Colorado (BB-45) is damaged by an explosion, the destroyer USS Ammen (DD-527) by a horizontal bomber and the submarine chaser SC-737 by grounding, all in the Okinawa area.

Levi Twiggs was born in Richmond County, Ga., on 23 May 1793 and was commissioned a second lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps on 10 November 1813.
Twiggs sortied from Kossol Roads on 1 January 1944 protecting a large task force intended for the invasion of Luzon.

USS Putnam inched in dangerously close to the beach to blast shore installations in support of the invading Marines and illuminated Japanese troop concentrations at night with star shells.
USS Putnam was one of three destroyers assigned during the period from 19 through 25 April 1948 to the United Nations mediator, Count Folke Bernadotte, to attempt to maintain peace between Arab and Israeli forces.
USS Putnam departed Norfolk on 25 September and transited the Suez Canal on 15 October, arriving at Yokosuka, Japan, on 10 November.

The two destroyers replaced the USS Daly (DD-519) and USS Twiggs (DD-591) damaged in a kamikaze attack that had begun against the Twiggs at 1730, and ended with the Daly at 1739.
The USS Van Valkenburgh (DD-656) in a “Good Samaritan” mission had come along side the Daly at 1910 to transfer her Medical Officer, Lieutenant M. Smale, along with Pharmacist Mate 3rd Class Charles B. Reed to attend the wounded on the Daly.
The USS Morrison was a USS Fletcher class destroyer with a crew of approximately 273.

The second ''Haraden'' was launched by Boston Navy Yard, Boston, Massachusetts, 19 March 1943; sponsored by Miss Caroline E. Derby, great-great-grandniece of Captain Jonathan Haraden; and commissioned at Boston 16 September 1943, Commander H. Allen, Jr., in command.
At Pearl Harbor ''Haraden'' was reassigned to escort carriers USS Natoma Bay (CVE-62) (CVE-62) and USS Manila Bay (CVE-61) (CVE-61) and repair ship USS Hector (AR-7) (AR-7) for the next major operation in the epic sweep through the Pacific—the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign.
As ''Haraden'' lay dead in the water, USS Twiggs (DD-591) (DD-591) came alongside to help and the destroyer was soon underway on her own power.

Despite the hazard of exploding ammunition from the blazing Twiggs, 188 survivors including 39 men who were wounded were rescued from the oily waters.
One of them struck at a destroyer which was standing offshore for bombardment duty - - the USS Twiggs, captained by Commander George Philip.
The three surviving officers were among the wounded: the Twiggs disaster was one of the few in which every officer in the embattled ship was either killed or injured.

Assigned in the spring of 1943 to the newly constructed USS Liscome Bay (CVE-56), Miller was lost when the carrier was torpedoed on 24 November 1943 during Operation Galvanic in the Gilbert islands.
American submarines USS Darter (SS-247) and USS Dace (SS-227) drew first blood in what would become known as the Battle for Leyte Gulf on 23 October 1944 when they sank, respectively, two of Kurita's cruisers: Maya and Atago.
Within a short time, aided by USS Putnam (DD-757) and an LCI, West Virginia closed and blasted enemy guns in an attempt to rescue her plane crew who had "dug in for the day" to await the arrival of the rescuers.

The first USS Tarbell (DD–142) was a Wickes class destroyer in the United States Navy during World War I.
On 31 December, Lea was severely damaged in a collision, and Tarbell took her in tow for Bermuda.
On 3 January 1944, the destroyer was relieved of her towing duties by Cherokee (AT-66) and Twiggs (DD-591) and caught up with the convoy at Horta in the Azores on the 7th.

They knew from my column that my dad has served on the USS Twiggs before she was torpedoed and sunk off Okinawa; that he died when I was 14; that my mother tried to kill me when I was in college and, when I survived, she refused to give me anything of my dad's.
They looked into the namesake of the USS Twiggs, found out where she'd sunk, what her ship number was, and then commissioned two patches especially for me.

USS Irwin (DD-794), a Fletcher-class destroyer, was a ship of the United States Navy named for Rear Admiral Noble E. Irwin (1869–1937).
Another enemy suicide plane was shot down 21 May.
Irwin figured in another mercy mission the night of 16 June 1945 when she assisted in the rescue of survivors from destroyer Twiggs (DD-591), sunk by combined air, torpedo, and suicide attacks.

As Haraden lay dead in the water, USS Twiggs (DD 591) came alongside to help and the destroyer was soon underway on her own power.
She arrived at San Pedro Bay 14 December 1944 and transferred her casualties 14 killed and 24 wounded.
