USS Van Buren (PF-42), a Tacoma-class frigate, was the 2nd ship of the United States Navy to hold this name.
The second Van Buren (PF-42), originally classified as PG-150, was laid down under a Maritime Commission contract (MC hull 1453) on 24 June 1943 at the Consolidated Steel Corporation shipuard in Los Angeles, California; launched on 27 July 1943, sponsored by Mrs.
Van Buren continued her convoy escort and screening duties with the 7th Amphibious Force, in the Philippines, into late 1944.

During Van Buren's presidency, the nation suffered a financial panic and depression.
Decommissioned on 6 May 1946, Van Buren was struck from the Navy list on 19 June 1946 and sold soon thereafter to the Sun Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., of Chester, Pa., for scrapping.

Comments: I was part of a USAF contingent that sailed from California to Japan aboard the USS Cape Esperance in March, 1954.

The first USS Astoria (1917) was seized by US Customs at the outbreak of World War I. The second USS Astoria (CA-34) was a heavy cruiser commissioned in 1934 and lost in the World War II Battle of Savo Island, 1942.
The third USS Astoria (CL-90) was a light cruiser commissioned 1944, active in the war, and decommissioned in 1949.
