The second USS Vincennes (CA-44) was a United States Navy New Orleans-class heavy cruiser sunk at the Battle of Savo Island[?] in 1942.
Late in May, as German troops were smashing Allied defenses in France, Vincennes steamed to the Azores and visited Ponta Delgada[?] from 4 to 6 June 1940 before she proceeded on for French Morocco[?] to load a shipment of gold for transport to the United States.
Vincennes joined other Fleet units for landing exercises at Culebra, Puerto Rico, on 4 February 1941 and sent her 50-foot boats to assist in unloading and troop debarkation drills.

While Jarvis limped away from Lunga Point, Vincennes and her sisters Quincy and Astoria steamed, as the northern escort force, to a position off Savo Island to screen the vulnerable transports which were still unloading off the invasion beaches.

Vincennes (CA-44) was laid down on 2 January 1934 at Quincy, Mass., by the Bethlehem Shipbuilding Company's Fore River plant, launched on 21 May 1936, sponsored by Miss Harriet Virginia Kimmell daughter of the mayor of Vincennes, Ind., and commissioned on 24 February 1937, Capt. Burton H. Green in command.
Vincennes opened fire at 1644 with her 5-inch, 20millimeter, and 1.1-inch antiaircraft batteries on the "Kales" approaching from the port side.
Three thousand yards from the transports, Vincennes, as in the previous day's action, was again in favorable firing position and opened up with every gun jn her battery, from 8-inch to 20-millimeter, that could bear on the attackers.

USS Vincennes, a 9400-ton New Orleans class heavy cruiser built at Quincy, Massachusetts, was commissioned in February 1937.
She continued with the carrier force during its abortive voyage to the south Pacific at the time of the Battle of the Coral Sea, then returned to Pearl Harbor in late May, in time to participate in the Battle of Midway on 4-6 June.
During that action, she screened USS Yorktown (CV-5) when she was attacked and disabled by Japanese dive and torpedo bombers.

USS Vincennes, a 10,000-ton Cleveland class light cruiser built at Quincy, Massachusetts, was commissioned in January 1944.
She performed shakedown operations in the Caribbean area and was subsequently transferred to the Pacific war zone, arriving at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, early in May. The new cruiser was soon in action, taking part in the Marianas Campaign in June, July and August 1944 as part of Task Force 58.
Vincennes continued to operate with the fast carriers during the Palaus Campaign in September, strikes in the Western Pacific in October, the Battle of Leyte Gulf on 24-25 October, and operations connected with the Philippines Campaign from November 1944 into January 1945.

ABOARD USS TARAWA, Western Pacific -- The Tarawa Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) stopped near the Solomon Islands recently for a wreath-laying ceremony, their latest stop on a path through the Pacific that has become a memorial trail of U.S. involvement in World War II.
Ceremonies were held aboard the ARG’s three ships -- USS Tarawa (LHA 1), USS Duluth (LPD 6) and USS Anchorage (LSD 36) -- to pay respects to the veterans of the many air, land and sea battles known as the Battle of Guadalcanal.
After the speeches, Wall accompanied Gunther and Tarawa's commanding officer, Capt. Garry Hall to the flight deck, as a Sailor and a Marine dropped the wreath into the same waters that claimed the burning hulks of the heavy cruisers USS Vincennes, USS Astoria and USS Quincy almost 58 years ago.

USS JARVIS was the second of the BAGLEY class 1500-tonners to be built at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA.
She was launched on the same day as USS PATTERSON, May 6, 1937, and was commissioned in October 1937.
USS JARVIS served with the Pacific fleet in the years before World War II, participating in fleet maneuvers both in the Pacific, off Panama, and in the Caribbean.

Vincennes was founded in 1731 or 1732 by soldier-explorer Francois Marie Bissot, Sieur de Vincennes, and was the site of old Fort Vincennes, captured twice during the American Revolution--in December 1778 and February 1779--by the Virginian, George Rogers Clark.
On 1 September 1939--the day on which Hitler's legions marched into Poland and commenced hostilities in Europe--Vincennes lay at anchor off Tompkinsville, N.Y. She then began conducting Neutrality Patrols off the east coast, ranging into the Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Yucatan, and continued these duties through the spring of 1940.

The plan had called for USS Enterprise (CV 6) to provide air combat cover while Hornet was to steam to where Col. Doolittle would lead the B-25s in the strike on Tokyo and other important Japanese cities.
Originally, the task force intended to proceed to within 400 miles of the Japanese coast; however, on the morning of 18 April a Japanese patrol boat, No. 23 Nitto Maru, sighted Hornet.
The patrol boat informed the Japanese of the presence and location of the American task force before the cruiser USS Nashville (CL 43) sank the craft.

But not so many years later, in the combat darkness of 09Aug42, the wood and canvas aircraft became torches which lit up their mother ships and made them glowing targets for Japanese cruisers and destroyers.
Astoria, along with USS Quincy (CA-39), USS Vincennes (CA-44) and HMAS Canberra, were all lost in that battle off Savo Island (Solomons).

The USS Willmarth (DE-638) on 16 May 1944 outside San Francisco Bay.
The US Navy gave her the name WILLMARTH (DE-638), named for Ensign Kenneth Willmarth, an engineer officer killed aboard the USS VINCENNES (CA-44) during the First Battle of Savo Island in the early hours of August 9, 1942.
The WILLMARTH, known to the crew as the "Mighty Willy," was the first DE commissioned with ten 20MMs (guns 20-9 and 20-10 were mounted on the fantail).
