The fifth USS Virginia (CGN-38) was a nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser[?], the lead ship of her class[?].
That employment lasted until 23 August when Virginia embarked upon a cruise to northern Europe to participate in [[Operation "Northern Wedding"]], a NATO exercise, the purpose of which was to test the ability to reinforce NATO forces in western Europe.
Virginia reentered Norfolk on 11 December and began preparations for her first deployment to the Mediterranean which was scheduled to commence in early 1979.

USS Virginia (CGN-38) was a nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser, the lead ship of her class, and the fifth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the state of Virginia.
In December 1990, Virginia deployed to the Mediterranean in support of Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm.
A victim of the Clinton administration's budget cutting, she was decommissioned relatively early and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 29 November 1994, VIRGINIA entered the Navy’s Nuclear-Powered Surface Ship and Submarine Recycling Program on 31 March 1999.

The four Virginia class guided missile cruisers were equipped to fulfill multiple tasks in all warfare mission areas.
Planned Refueling Complex Overhauls were canceled in the early 1990s due to the expense of maintaining the nuclear propulsion components, and the ships were all decommissioned after a relatively brief period of service averageing somewhat less than two decades.
Thus the CGN-41 was commissioned in 1980 with a life expectancy of 38 years, though it was retired in 1997 after only half that period in service.

The construction of the Modified Virginia cruisers was cancelled in January 1979, and the proposal was resurrected in March 1981 only to be cancelled once again (almost certainly for the final time) in February 1983.

JAG also includes the warning line decals needed if you were to convert the Cold War version of the Virginia into her 1980's fit with Tomahawk launchers at the stern.
In addition, after painting these 100 men for the Virginia in one evening, my next project will be a 1/700 scale seeing eye dog...
