 USS Washington (BB-56) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
USS Washington (BB-56), the second of two North Carolina-class battleships, was the third ship of the United States Navy named in honor of the 42nd state.
Washington resumed battle practice in the Hawaiian operating area upon conclusion of those repairs and alterations and joined a convoy on 27 July to form Task Group (TG) 56.14, bound for the South Pacific.
Washington fueled east of that chain of islands and then continued her screening duties with TG 58.4 to the south and west of Saipan, supporting the continuing air strikes on islands in the Marianas, the strikes concentrated on Guam by that point.

On March 26, 1942, USS Washington sailed for Britain as flagship of Rear Admiral John W. Wilcox's Task Force 39; the next day, Admiral Wilcox was lost overboard, presumably after suffering a heart attack.
On February 2, she collided with USS Indiana and was out of action until June, arriving back on station for the landings in the Mariana Islands.
During the night action of the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, on November 14-15, Washington sank the Japanese battleship Kirishima in the first battleship action of the war.

Howard's father, a marine, Howard Frank Wright Jr., was both a plank owner on the Washington as well as a crew member of the USS Indiana from April 29, 1943 to April 01 1944, during the collision.
The estimated course of the U.S.S. WASHINGTON on impact was 325",
In this instance the Indiana's holding bulkhead remained intact and the ship's longitudinal stability was not jeopardized, However, it appears that a very similar collision, involving damage to the stern as well as this critical compartment, possibly would have been sufficient to cause the ship to sink.

Washington (Battleship No. 47) was laid down on 30 June 1919 at Camden, N.J., by the New York Shipbuilding Corp.; reclassified BB-47 on 17 July 1920; launched on 1 September 1921; and sponsored by Miss Jean Summers, the daughter of Congressman J. Summers of Washington state.
After multiple days of being subjected to detonations and explosions, the USS Washington was sunk by salvos from the 14" and 9" guns of USS Texas on 25 November 1924.
However, on 8 February 1922, two days after the signing of the Washington Treaty for the Limitation of Naval Armaments on 6 February 1922, all construction work ceased on the 75.9 percent completed dreadnought.

 U.S. Navy Battleships - USS Indiana (BB 58)
While maneuvering to refuel destroyers that night, Indiana collided with battleship USS Washington (BB 56).
For the next 11 months, Indiana helped protect carriers USS Enterprise (CV 6) and USS Saratoga (CV 3), then supporting American advances in the Solomons.
Temporary repairs to her starboard side were made at Majuro, and she arrived Pearl Harbor 13 February for additional work.
