  USS Wasp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Wasp's single action of war was in October 1812 when she engaged HMS Frolic in battle, firing from a distance of 50-60 yards.
Wasp was returned to her owners in early 1814 and the Lake Champlain battery transferred to the schooner USS Ticonderoga.
Wasp was last seen in late November 1814 by a Swedish merchantman and was apparently lost in a storm at sea.

Wasp and her consorts raced toward Samar at flank speed until 1030 when they began launching planes for strikes at Kurita's ships which were still some 330 miles away.
In the summer of 1948, Wasp was taken out of the reserve fleet and placed in the New York Naval Shipyard for refitting and alterations to enable her to accommodate the larger, heavier, and faster planes of the jet age.
Wasp then resumed antisubmarine warfare exercises along the Atlantic seaboard and in the Caribbean until she underwent overhaul in the fall of 1963 for FRAM (Fleet rehabilitation and modernization) overhaul in the Boston Naval Shipyard.

The respite was brief, for, on 30 June, Wasp sortied in TG 58.2-withTG 58.1-for strikes at Iwo Jima and Chiehi Jima.
Wasp operated with Task Group Bravo throughout 1959, cruising along the eastern seaboard conducting operations at Norfolk, Va., Bermuda, and Quonset Point, R.I. On 27 February 1960, she entered the Boston Naval Shipyard for overhaul.
Wasp returned to Quonset Point on 8 September and remained there through 11 October when she got underway to offload ammunition at Earle, N.J., prior to a period of restricted availability at the Boston Naval Shipyard beginning on 15 October.

USS Wasp (LHD 1), the flagship for Expeditionary Strike Group 2, transited the Suez Canal and entered the Mediterranean Sea Aug. 21 after more than six months deployed in support of the global war on terrorism.
The fifth WASP was a ship-rigged sloop-of-war constructed in 1813 and commissioned in early 1814, WASP was put to sea on May1, 1814 for a war cruise to the western approach of the English Channel.
Wasp was dispatched to the Pacific in June 1942 to reinforce U.S. Naval forces there in the wake of the carrier battles of Coral Sea and Midway and in preparation for offensive operations in the Southern Pacific.

USS Wasp was built by Bethlehem, Quincy and laid down on the 1st April 1936, launched 4th April 1939 and completed 25th April 1940.
USS Wasp could carry 76 aircraft and this was made up in 1942 with 27 fighters, 37 bombers and 12 torpedo Planes.

USS Wasp, a 27,100-ton Essex class aircraft carrier built at Quincy, Massachusetts, was commissioned on 24 November 1943.
On 26 April 1952, while en route to Gibraltar, Wasp collided with and sank the destroyer minesweeper Hobson, necessitating a return to the U.S. for repairs to her mangled bow.
This photograph was included with a 11 February 1967 USS Wasp press release, concerning her appearance at New Orleans' Mardi Gras festivities.

As large as a WWII Essex-class fleet carrier, Wasp and her sisters were designed to serve as the flagship for an Amphibious Ready Group (ARG), with command and control spaces for both the Navy ARG staff and the command element of a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU).
With their modern command and control suite, ‘spacious’ accommodations for both personnel and equipment, and large medical facility, they are also well suited to a range of duties, including humanitarian assistance and rescue operations.
I don’t trust my memory, but I do have a number of photos of Wasp from my time aboard, plus an exercise in which I participated in 1995, where she was the flagship.

The Wasp is a little cleaner overall in the molding process, but there is now PE brass included for crane and other various details.
The Wasp kit could be built without using the enclosed brass (with the exception of the 20mm and 50cal mounts), and have a fantastic little carrier.

The sudden transition is expected to improve external shipboard security by allowing watch standers to intercept potential enemies with a faster and lighter weapon.
In 1963, the U.S. Army made the same transition during the war in Vietnam, and went on to adopt it as their standard combat weapon six years later in 1969.

I was on the Wasp from 1969 until decomissioned (around 71-72) at Quonset Point.

USS Wasp (LHD 1) Sailors enjoyed a rare opportunity for camaraderie and esprit de corps while steaming toward home port recently, filling the ships cavernous hangar bay to enjoy a buffet-style dinner during the last scheduled underway.
The elaborate dinner, normally served to dignitaries, was the Supply Department’s Food Service Division’s way of saying "job well done" after Wasp successfully completed its final evaluation problem, missile exercise, and ammunition on load.
