USS West Virginia, a 32,600-ton Colorado class battleship built at Newport News, Virginia, was commissioned in December 1923, the last battleship completed for the United States Navy for nearly two decades.
West Virginia's base was moved to Pearl Harbor in 1940, and she was there on 7 December 1941, when the Japanese attacked with an overwhelming force of carrier aircraft.
West Virginia arrived in the Pacific combat zone in October, and soon was participating in pre-invasion bombardment of Leyte, in the Philippines.

 African American Registry: Dorie Miller was a naval hero!
In 1940 he had temporary duty aboard USS Nevada (BB-36) and was serving on the West Virginia when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941.
Of the 1,541 men on West Virginia during the attack, 130 were killed and 52 wounded.
Assigned to the USS Liscome Bay (CVE-56) in 1943, Miller was on board that escort carrier during Operation Galvanic, the seizure of Makin and Tarawa Atolls in the Gilbert Islands.

After further destroyer duty in the USS Flusser (DD-289) and USS Henderson (AP-1), and recruiting duty at Little Rock, Arkansas, he served as Senior Assistant Engineer of the battleship USS West Virginia (BB-48) from 1926 to 1929, then returned to the Naval Academy as an instructor in Mechanical Engineering.

He was transferred to command of the USS DENVER in July 1943, and returned that cruiser to the United States after she suffered severe battle damage off Rabaul in November 1943.

As a midshipman, he was captain of the Navy football team in 1939, captain of the Navy wrestling team in 1940 and graduated on June 6, 1940 as an ensign.
His first tour of duty was on board USS West Virginia (BB-48) and he was attached to that battleship when it was sunk on Dec. 7, 1941 as a result of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor.
