On 24 April 1967 the keel for USS WHIPPLE (DE 1062) was laid at the Todd Shipyard in Seattle, Washington.
WHIPPLE was christened in the memory of Commodore Abraham WHIPPLE of the Continental Navy.
WHIPPLE earned her Combat Action Ribbon by participating extensively during the Vietnam conflict in the area of Naval Gunfire Support and other operations in support of the armed forces of the Republic of Vietnam and the United States.

USS Whipple (DD- 217/AG-117), a Clemson-class destroyer was the second ship of the United States Navy named in honor of Captain Abraham Whipple (1733–1819), who served in the Continental Navy.
Whipple was laid down on 12 June and launched 6 November 1919 from William Cramp and Sons; sponsored by Mrs.
Whipple convoyed the disabled American steamer SS Haddon into Constantinople and later fueled at Constanţa where she learned that Russian Bolshevik troops were approaching the Crimea.

The first USS Whipple (DD-15) was a Truxton-class destroyer in the United States Navy.
The destroyer periodically served as flagship of the flotilla and operated off the east coast and in the Caribbean until she was placed in reserve at Norfolk on 5 September 1905.
Whipple soon commenced patrols off the approaches to the vital Panama Canal before departing the Panama Canal Zone on 5 July.

 USS Higbee DD 806 The Battle of Dong Hoi - Viet Nam - 19 April 1972
USS Higbee DD 806 became the first U.S. naval vessel attacked by enemy MiG-17s, one of which dropped a bomb on the destroyer's stern, wounding four sailors.
USS Sterett stood by, as Higbee fought her fires, completed her turn and proceeded out of the area, still with her rudder inoperative.
The USS Higbee (DD-806) was back in Tonkin action minus her aft gunmount, but with her structural damages repaired, thanks to fast work by the Ship Repair Facility at Subic Bay, Philippines.

 U.S. Navy - A Brief History of Aircraft Carriers
USS Lexington (CV 2) was at sea about 425 miles southeast of Midway toward which she was headed to deliver a Marine Scout Bombing Squadron.
USS Enterprise (CV 6) was also at sea, about 200 miles west of Pearl Harbor, returning from Wake Island where she had delivered a Marine Fighter Squadron.
In the ensuing battle, the four large Japanese carriers were sunk, carrying with them 258 planes along with a high percentage of Japan's most highly trained and battle-experienced carrier pilots, a blow to Japan from which she could not recover.

She took departure from the Panama Canal area on 5 July along with the Truxton and the USS Whipple (DD-15) and after a stop for re-coaling at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba on 8 July, had arrived at Norfolk on 13 July.
On 3 May 1918, the Captain of the USS Stewart was awarded the Croix de Guerre and the entire crew of the ship was given a Letter of Commendation by the French government for their part in the rescue efforts that took place following the explosion of the Florence H.
Jesse W. Covington, of the U.S.S. Stewart, plunged overboard to rescue a survivor who was surrounded by powder boxes and too exhausted to help himself, fully realizing that similar powder boxes in the vicinity were continually exploding and that he was thereby risking his life in saving the life of this man.

The WHIPPLE and destroyers OVERTON and HUMPHREYS arrived at Sevastopol on the morning of November 14, 1920 while hundreds of boats scurried about the harbor, often crammed to the gunwales with fleeing White Russians.
The WHIPPLE stood by to evacuate selected individuals bearing passes from Vice Admiral McCully who was in charge of the evacuation.
After the refugee rescue mission the WHIPPLE resumed her duties as station ship and mail carrying duties with the Near Eastern Naval Detachment and continued these tasks until early spring 1921.

But despite her deficiencies, USS Langley proved to be the progenitor of her race.
Langley served for only 14 years as a carrier, but in that time she and her crew pioneered the tactics and techniques that are still used today, albeit with modifications for new technology.
