The first USS Wyoming of the United States Navy was a wooden-hulled screw sloop that fought on the Union side during the American Civil War.
Wyoming answered the Japanese cannon "as fast as the guns could be brought to bear" while shells from the shore guns passed through her rigging.
Wyoming then passed between the brig and the bark on the starboard hand and the steamer on the port, steaming within a pistol shot's range.

The first California militia ship was the USS MARION, a wooden sloop of the third class built in 1839 and assigned to the naval militia on January 20, 1898.
Southern California was served by stationing at San Diego the USS PINTA, a Civil War steamer being a sloop of the fourth class.
According to one of her officers she was also a important factor in increasing and sustaining the war enthusiasm of the people who had a particular affection for OREGON which had for long been a fixture in the Bay.

USS WILLIAM G. Designed by, and named for, John A. Dahlgren, 423 3.4-inch rifled boat howitzers were produced from 1861 to 1865 at Washington Navy Yard.
Number 125 was lost on USS CONGRESS when she burned and sank from damage inflicted by the ironclad CSS VIRGINIA in Hampton Roads on March 8, 1862.

December 26, 1861: U.S. Marines from the sloop USS Dale skirmished with Confederate troops at the mouth of the South Edisto River, SC.
July 16, 1863 - The Marine detachment of the sloop USS Wyoming took part in the action when the Wyoming was fired upon by shore batteries and was attacked by ships of the Prince of Magato in the Straits of Shimonoseki, Japan.
The U.S. Marines on the USS Lackawanna were able to furnish substantial protection to their ship during its fight with the Tennessee by effective delivery of small-arms fire through the gun ports of the enemy vessel.

Two years later, USS New York (BB-34), while she was in a fleet problem in the Carribean at night, tested a greatly improved 200-mc radar set.

The USS CYANE was the oldest of the squadron of the 1860's and although she was put out of commission after thirty-four years service, she was not sold until she had reached the half century mark.

In addition to expedition mail, a United States patrol gunboat, the USS Bennington, was on station at Honolulu until June 16 when she was relieved by USS Mohican, a wooden hull screw sloop, in turn relieved by USS Philadelphia, a cruiser class ship, on August 3.
USS Monterey and the collier Brutus were escorts.
Troops in the third expedition were Volunteer Infantrymen from Wyoming, Minnesota, North Dakota, Idaho and Nebraska, the Astor Battery of New York Volunteers, the 3rd U.S. Artillery, H & K Batteries and regular Army Infantry.

Officially she was the USS MONOCACY, the first of two gunboats to bear that name proudly on the Yangtze, and typical of the type of boat sent to the Yangtze to look after American interests.
She even served as an escort in WWII as the USS DOVER (IX-30) and at war's end she was struck from the Register of Naval Vessels in 1946 and sold for scrap that same year at age 50.
When USS ELCANO, USS VILLALOBOS and USS POMPEY arrived in Shanghai they were immediately placed under the operational control of the skipper of the monitor USS MONADNOCK, a venerable 4,000 ton Civil War relic that had been retrofitted and modernized so many times little remained of her original self.

The British were advancing on Saratoga and on September 19, they ran into American forces in a clearing in the woods at Freeman's Farm.
The first ''Saratoga'' was a 16-gun sloop launched in 1780 and lost at sea the following year.
In the canceled Science Fiction series Space: Above and Beyond there is a SCVN (Space Carrier Vehicle Nuclear) named the USS Saratoga which serves as the home base for the 58th Marine Fighter Squadron (the main fighter group of the show) known as the Wildcards.

July 13, 1863: The screw sloop Wyoming attacks Japanese warlord Price Nagata's forces in the Shimonoseki strait between the islands of Kyushu and Honshu.
The strike was in retribution for an attack a month earlier against the steamer Pembroke, which was fired on as it passed through the strait.
Wyoming was outgunned but still managed to sink all three of the warlord's warships and even shelled the forts ashore.

Named for a Pennsylvania valley, the first USS Wyoming began service with the Pacific Squadron at San Francisco in 1860.
Although Wyoming crossed the track of CSS Alabama, the two ships failed to meet.
Following an attack on the American merchantman Pembroke the next day, Wyoming sailed from Yokohama to Shimonoseki, and in an hour-long engagement on July 16, she bombarded Japanese shore positions and sank a Japanese steamer.

But it seems the intended namesake was the USS Pueblo, a US Navy intelligence vessel that was hijacked by North Korean forces in 1968.

Athough Montana continues to be snubbed, even for submarines, its name was given to the nuclear ballistic missile submarine in James Cameron's 1993 movie, The Abyss.
The crew on the film, including Cameron himself, frequently wore USS Montana caps on the shoot -- when they weren't actually under water.
The Civil War navy continued the tradition of all these kinds of names, including some that may not have been seen since, either was warships or auxiliaries, like the Monongahela (a steam sloop commissioned in 1863).
