She was laid down in 1838 by the Norfolk Navy Yard, launched in 1839, and commissioned on 15 November 1840, Commander John H. Aulick[?] in command.
Yorktown departed Hampton Roads on 13 December, bound for the Pacific.
Yorktown remained at that port until she got underway on 2 May 1843 for the east coast of the United States.

The third YORKTOWN (CV 5), sunk on 7 June 1942 as the result of enemy action during and subsequent to the Battle of Midway, was built by the Newport News Shipbuilding Company, sponsored at the launching on 4 April 1936 by Mrs.
YORKTOWN had been on a 104-day battle cruise when she was sunk, and she had participated in every major naval engagement of Pacific Fleet task forces.
The present YORKTOWN (CV 10) continued the high standards of performance in battle set by her gallant namesake (CV 5), and compiled a stirring record of revenge against the enemy from the first time she stuck her nose into the Pacific until the end of the war.

The first USS Yorktown was a 16-gun sloop-of-war of the U.S. Navy.
After calling at Rio de Janeiro from 23 January to 5 February 1841, the sloop rounded Cape Horn and arrived at Valparaíso, Chile, on 20 March.
Yorktown called at Mazatlán before heading south to resume operations along the coast of South America.

She continued her cruising—primarily out of Callao and Valparaiso—through the early fall of 1842, when she departed Callao on 23 September, bound for San Francisco, where she arrived on 27 October.
Charles H. Bell in command, Yorktown departed New York on 11 October, bound for Funchal, Madeira.
Yorktown ranged up and down the west coast of Africa, going as far south as Capetown, Cape Colony, as she labored to curtail the slave trade.

 Artifacts Removed From USS Yorktown Debris Site without permission
The U.S. Naval Historical Center learned in the fall of 2000 that Arqueonautas Worldwide Arqueologia Subaquatica SA, http://www.arq.de/mainindex.htm, had apparently located the site of the sunken USS Yorktown and recovered artifacts from the debris field.
The USS Yorktown was part of the "African Squadron" when it sank September 6, 1850 on a reef at Isle de Mayo in the Cape Verde Islands.
As to other artifacts removed from the Yorktown site without the Navy's permission, as well as to those artifacts removed without permission from other sunken U.S. Naval vessels or aircraft, the U.S. Navy has a strong policy against paying money for the return of its own property.

The USS Hammann (DD-412) was launched by the Federal Shipbuilding and Drydock Co., Kearny, N.J., 4 February 1939; sponsored by Miss Lillian Hammann; and commissioned 11 August 1939, Comdr.
Next morning, however, efforts were mounted to save the stricken carrier, a skeleton crew returned on board, and attempts were made to tow her to safety.
Four torpedoes were loosed two missed, one passed under Hammann and hit Yorktown, and the fourth hit the destroyer amidships, breaking her back.
