 Eduard Gufeld by Bill Wall
In 1971 he took 5th place in the 39th USSR championship semifinals in Novosibirsk, but failed to qualify and play in the finals (he had to be in the top 4) by 1/2 point.
Eduard (Eddie) Efimovich Gufeld was born in Kiev in the Ukraine on March 19, 1936.
In 1988 he was at the chess olympiad in Salonika, Greece as a chess trainer to the Russian women's team.

This was the first world championship match to officially have seconds (a second was an assistant who stayed up all night analyzing an adjourned chess position and who gave advice to the champion as to the next move).
In 1956 the USSR and French Chess Federation agreed to transfer his remains to the cemetery in Montparnasse, Paris.
His older brother, Alexei, played chess and was able to draw Harry Nelson Pillsbury when the latter gave a simultaneous blindfold display in Moscow on 22 boards.

FIDE staged a parallel championship match, featuring Karpov and Timman, and Karpov's win then provided the chess world with two World Champions: an official FIDE-sanctioned one, and a player unbeaten in match play who was clearly the world's best.
