	US Dept of State - USTR Says WTO Rejects Canadian Challenge to U.S. Law
		USTR said that the case was part of Canada's broader strategy of contesting U.S. antidumping and countervailing duty orders on softwood lumber.
		USTR has asserted that Canadian softwood lumber sold in the U.S. market is directly and indirectly subsidized by provincial governments through a complex web of below-market-rate pricing, long-term timber harvesting contracts and mandated operation requirements.
		In other words, imports made prior to the time that the USTR directs the Commerce Department to modify or revoke the order would not be subject to the new determination.

	Earthjustice: Newsroom
		The lawsuit, filed Wednesday by Earthjustice on behalf of the Center for International Environmental Law, seeks to force the USTR to disclose written proposals it has made to other governments concerning provisions of the FTAA agreement, a treaty that would bind the United States to powerful new trade rules.
		"USTR is negotiating binding rules that could affect the ability of the United States to protect the environment and human health," said Stephen Porter, Senior Attorney with CIEL.
		USTR did post sketchy summaries of the documents on its website, but they conceal more than they reveal, according to CIEL and Earthjustice.

		On 4 November, US Trade Representative (USTR) Robert Zoellick informed Congressional leaders of the Bush Administration's intent to begin negotiations in the hopes of forming a free trade agreement (FTA) with the countries included in the South African Customs Union (SACU): Lesotho, Botswana, South Africa, Namibia and Swaziland.
		According to the USTR, an FTA with SACU, already the US' largest sub- Saharan African export market, would likely enhance both US political and economic links to the African region and lead to spurred development.
		SACU accounts for up to USD 3 billion in exports a year, and in 2001, combined two-way trade between the US and the region was estimated at almost USD 8 billion.
