Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) and Military Grid Reference System (MGRS) – FMNH
UTM Zone 32 has been widened to 9° (at the expense of zone 31) between latitudes 56° and 64° (band V) to accommodate southwest Norway.
UTM zone number and zone character are used to identify an area 6 degrees in east-west extent and 8 degrees in north-south extent.
UTM zone number and designator are followed by 100 km square easting and northing identifiers.

 UTM Grid
This line is known as the ‘central meridian’; and is the only line within the zone that can be drawn between the poles and be perpendicular to the equator (in other words, it is the new ‘equator’ for the projection and suffers the least amount of distortion).
UTM coordinates are typically given with the zone first, then the easting, then the northing.
On older topographic maps published in the United States, UTM grids are shown along the edges of the map as small blue ticks.

UTM Short Course   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
UTM coordinates are a military grid system used for quickly pin pointing map locations with reasonable accuracy.
The UTM coordinate system is not usable everywhere in the world, but works everywhere in the USA, and everywhere in Canada south of 84 degrees latitude.
UTM coordinates are much quicker and easier to use out in the wilderness than the standard degree/minutes/seconds (also deg/min/sec, or DMS) coordinates promoted by GPS users and manufacturers.

In particular, > > >>The central meridian and >>false_northing parameters are specified by the UTM zone.
I think we've been resisting making things too damn complicated since most model data is fine on a spherical earth, but as we get to regional and local models and try to connect to GIS, we are going to see more complexity.
UTM in my experience so far is the most important of these projections that require specifying the ellipsoidal earth, but all of them could in principle use an ellipsoid.

Universal Transverse Mercator(UTM) Grid, Fact Sheet 077-10 (August 2001)
The UTM grid is shown on all quadrangle maps prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS).
On 7.5-minute quadrangle maps (1:24,000 and 1:25,000 scale) and 15-minute quadrangle maps (1:50,000, 1:62,500, and standard-edition 1:63,360 scales), the UTM grid lines are indicated at intervals of 1,000 meters, either by blue ticks in the margins of the map or with full grid lines.
On maps at 1:100,000 and 1:250,000 scale, a full UTM grid is shown at intervals of 10,000 meters and is numbered and used in the same way.

Converting UTM to Latitude and Longitude (Or Vice Versa)
UTM grids, on the other hand, are created by laying a square grid on the earth.
I saw US military maps of Germany shift their UTM grids by about 300 meters when a more modern datum was used for the maps.
For converting UTM to latitude and longitude, however, the Army publication has formulas that involve latitude (the quantity to be found) and which require reverse interpolation from tables.

The Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) Coordinate System
The U.S. Army is frequently given credit for creating the UTM system, but the true history is a lot more complex than this brief statement suggests.

The UTM system's accuracy is rated as one in twenty five hundred (this is usually written as 1:2,500).

UTM FAQ   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
UTM, Universal Transverse Mercator, is a system of world coordinates like latitude and longitude, from 80 degrees south latitude to 84 degrees north latitude, except the measurements are in meters and UTM lines are orthogonal (always at right-angles to each other).
UTM Northing is the distance north from the equator in meters and Easting is the distance east from 60 central meridians of 6-degree-wide zones starting at longitude 180 degrees.
The UTM map scale increases to either side of the central meridan, so the scale is reduced to 0.9996.

As I said earlier, the UTM grid on the map is the key to coordinating the map with the GPS.
In using UTM grid coordinates, the "easting" from the zone meridian is always given first, and then the "northing".

All UTM Zones are subdivided down the middle by a Central Meridian assigned an Easting of 500,000 meters.
The Easting value of a UTM coordinate is expressed relative to the Central Meridian in the same way that the Northing is expressed relative to the Equator.

SonicWALL - UTM: The Future of Threat Protection   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Coined by IDC, UTM refers to a security device that provides broad network protection by combining multiple security features—firewalling, anti-virus, and intrusion detection and prevention—on a single hardware platform.
Many UTM solutions require file caching and rebooting during the file scan and update processes, impeding the overall firewall performance.
It's no surprise then that SonicWALL's UTM solution has emerged as the worldwide leader in helping companies defend against network attacks, simplify administration through a single management interface, and lower the total cost of network security ownership.
