Roughly 50 percent of the population of metropolitan San Antonio is Hispanic, and UTSA believes its student body should reflect the ethnic composition of the area.
All colleges of engineering tend to attract students who enjoy and excel in science and math.

UTSA President Ricardo Romo said he's optimistic legislators will hold a special session this summer to approve tuition revenue bonds for college construction projects.
Since Pantic-Tanner became the first dean of UTSA's college of engineering in August 2001, enrollment has swelled from 1,000 to 1,800 and is expected to hit 2,500 within five years.

After decades of wishing for a graduate engineering program, city business leaders attended a groundbreaking ceremony that day for an $83.7 million building at the University of Texas at San Antonio to house such a program — one that was just beginning to offer three doctorate degrees in engineering.
That's why UTSA President Ricardo Romo already is pushing the Legislature for another $75 million for another building just for the UTSA College of Engineering, Pantic-Tanner said.
The UTSA engineering program is doing everything San Antonio hoped for back in the days when city business leaders knew it was necessary to attract better companies.

Today, San Antonio College and University of Texas at San Antonio officials announced new grants and an enhanced articulation agreement to help address the state and national crisis in engineering education.
SAC President Robert Zeigler and UTSA President Ricardo Romo also participated in the announcements, in addition to Dan Wittliff, PE, President of the Texas Society of Professional Engineers, who commented on the shortage of engineering graduates.
UTSA’s Pantic-Tanner assisted SAC with their grant proposals by providing letters of support and aiding in the expansion of a new articulation agreement for 2+2 transfers.

Of particular interest is a new community outreach program wherein an Engineering Explorer Post, sponsored by the College of Engineering and affiliated with the Boy Scouts of America, was formed as a way to interest high school students in engineering.
Recent events particularly worthy of note are the university name change, the beginning of selective admissions, the formation of an Engineering Explorer Post, the revision of the Introduction to Engineering course, and the Surviving the Freshman Year program initiated by the ASME student section.
It is extremely difficult to quantify the interactions and the overall effect which the integrated recruiting and retention programs have on attracting students to the engineering and technology programs of the College, and on increasing their chances for success in the curriculum.

James D. Spaniolo, dean of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University, one of the nation's major research institutions, was named president of the University of Texas at Arlington on Wednesday, November 19 by the U.T. System Board of Regents.
Spaniolo is chief academic officer of a college that has five departments (advertising, audiology and speech sciences, communication, journalism, and telecommunication) and enrolls 3,500 undergraduates and 400 graduate students.
She received a B.A. from Mary Hardin-Baylor College graduating with honors, a master's degree from Baylor University, and a Ph.D. from the University of Houston in 1958.

Mauli Agrawal, interim dean of the college of engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio (UTSA), says that although more women are going into the technology field, those numbers could be increased further with more mentoring in our public schools.
In fact, Agrawal says UTSA is working on outreach programs that will help reach girls in middle and high schools to show them the opportunities in the technology industry.
UTSA is also hiring more female faculty members, Agrawal adds.
